Description: The Salamander is great city-centre pub with none of the social stigma attached to some of the bars in Bath. ‘The Sally’ serves good food and a fine choice of beers from Bath Ales and beyond, and welcomes a friendly, eclectic audience. It’s small, it’s snug but it’s oh so special! The Salamander is tucked neatly away just off Queen Square in the heart of the Georgian city of Bath. Historically a ‘steak and chop house’, it now consists of a wonderfully simple bar on the ground floor and an impressive dining room complete with galley kitchen upstairs.Using the finest produce from local suppliers, ‘The Sally’ is renowned for its imaginative and varied menu, available both downstairs in the bar and upstairs.

“Small but welcoming pub with good food.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2014

We called in here on the recommendation of a local shop keeper when i was talking about somewhere to have a pint of cider. its a cosy little pub tucked around the corner sort of away from the main shopping area. My friends were impressed with the ale and cider choice and we all had a lovely meal in there with good service.

“Dinner at the Salamander”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2014

We selected the Salamander following a review in the Daily Telegraph and while the food was good the restaurant area, were we were, lacked any atmosphere and the service was not good, with only one waitress to service all the tables. If you do want to visit try the downstairs pub area which seems more lively and has the same menu as the restaurant.

Great to hear you read about us in the Telegraph and that you enjoyed your meals with us. I can only apologise that there wasn't perhaps as much atmosphere as you would have liked upstairs. We do our best to make it warm and cosy upstairs to make it a very intimate affair when you dine with us and I am sorry that didn't come across on this occasion

“Another curate's egg”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2014

Strangely, the bar is constantly patronised by drosophilae (or similar) - is there a mad professor doing genetic experiments in a back room? Also, on cold days, lit candles (see pic) would be needed by those sitting by the single-glazed windows in the restaurant.

No matter, the ale and beer is the best on offer in Bath although I have made the point (to Bath Ales) that their range would, in my opinion, be complemented by the return of Wild Hare on draft. The fine SPA is just £3.15 - a pretty good price for a city-centre pub.

If we hadn't been booked in for a meal, I could easily have scoffed a couple of the homemade sausage rolls on offer at the bar - they looked damn good.

The meal was the curate's egg. The chowder - superb. The day's fish, grey mullet - pretty good. The £20, 8oz, 28-day aged, pasture-fed (hopefully?) steak was a tad disappointing. It was thin (from tenderizing?) and, given its (lack of) depth and (perhaps) the fact that it was ordered "medium to well", quite dry. The accompanying Dauphinoise too was dryish.

Moving now to my beef and Barnsey (ale) pie - this, again, was dry - perhaps the result of our mid/late-afternoon booking. However, I like 'dry' (no gravy) and so it suited me. The slice offered was also a little on the ungenerous side - this certainly wasn't 'northern portions'. Aye up, t'pie offerings by neighbour 'The Raven', whilst not homemade, are more generous and about three quid cheaper.

The pieces de resistance (moving now from 'up north' to France) here, though, are the veggies. Curly kale (with the pie) and beetroot & purple sprouting (with the fish) to die for.

Her majesty's 'Chocolate and Dark Side' cake was "okay" - again, a bit dry but maybe by design. My British cheesebored (sorry board) was bland, bland and bland.

Service was excellent particularly as, it seems (on totting up), we were not charged for any of the drinks we had with the meal (two large wines, two Coronas and a half of SPA). What service! I shall return to settle up - honest guv'.

Great to see you yesterday. Thank you so much for popping back to settle your debt. Could I just point out to the masses that in fact there was no debt. You paid on the day and rather than failing to charge correctly, you were merely a victim of our incredible value! :D

Thrilled to hear what you think of our beers and like we have said before, Wild Hare may just make its way back to the pumps in the future!

Apologies that our steak and dauphinoise potatoes were a tad dry. That's not like us and I am sincerely sorry. Had it been brought to our attention at the time we could have replaced this for you at a moments notice! Similarly with the chocolate cake. I cant apologise enough for getting both of these wrong on your visit. The pie, however, was intentional as you let us know how you liked it before hand. I would have for potential customers reading this to think that is how we serve our food all the time!

I'm dismayed to hear you thought our cheeses were boring! Bath Soft is a local legend. We use it on our cheeseboards not only to support local producers but also because it won silver at the 2013 world cheese awards.
Cerney, our blue cheese you tried is from Cirencester. It won gold in the world cheese awards 2012 and super gold in 2013. It also won gold in the international cheese awards in 2013. One of the most highly awarded and interesting cheeses out there!
The mature cheddar was Quicks from Devon. Needless to say, its highly decorated!
We also serve a dollop of our home made chutney with Dark Side stout and some splendid crackers!

Many thanks for taking the time to review us! Next time you come back I'll make sure you actually do get a free round!

“The Sally was right up our alley ....!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2014

We stopped at The Salamander twice on a recent weekend in Bath. Enjoyed the Bath ales, particularly Gem. It has a nice warm atmosphere, not too busy, probably because it's tucked away down a side street. Both times we were there, we found classic R&B soul music playing in the background, something we both enjoy. The staff seemed pleasant and helpful.

“Great beer, great food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2014 via mobile

Only went in because it was raining but what a find! Great Bath Ales beer of which we had several, amazing sausage rolls and excellent sandwiches at the bar, so all in all .... Fabulous! Will definitely seek it out again when next in Bath.
