I was almost put off going to The Acorn, as Demuths is now called, by the recent reviews here which said it was cramped and the music was too loud. Who would want to go somewhere like that? However, we decided to poke our heads in because the aromas from the restaurant were so inviting, and we found a cosy little place with a convivial atmosphere. The music was playing unobtrusively in the background and the waiting staff were buzzing around, very friendly.
We were seated downstairs. The menu was full of unusual combinations of flavours and the food lived up to the descriptions. I had griddled squash with pea purée, which came with a myriad of extra additions including a mint granita. The combination of the hot squash and the frozen granita was really exciting - someone has gone to a lot of trouble to create this food and I'm so glad we didn't miss out on it.
The service was friendly and the waiting staff knew the menu well, explaining the more obscure ingredients to us when we ordered. Don't skip dessert - they are superb. I had the roast peaches. Wonderful.
I'm not a vegetarian but I love this kind of food. It's imaginative, healthy and delicious. Give it a try.
