“As expected.....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

I paid just £35 for b&b and it was absolutely fine. The room had a shared bathroom but as no-one else was staying, it wasn't a problem. The room was spacious and clean and the staff were very pleasant. Decent pub, decent food...all good

My wife and myself stayed here in the middle of Feb. We initially were booked in for two nights having trawled the Internet for somewhere cheap and cheerful to stay. The previous reviews helped us decide on the Old Post Office. We arrived on a Monday and were greeted by the friendly bar man. We had booked a double en suite room, and having negotiated a few flights of stairs arrived at room 3. The room was quite large, with a good double bed and a large bathroom (no bath, just a shower). The usual tea and coffee tray was provided, as was a small flat screen tv mounted on the wall. There was plenty of wardrobe space and a dressing table. The room was basic but clean and tidy as was the bathroom, both the en suite and the shared one. There was a little lack of shelves in the bathroom for your tooth brushes etc, but this was the only minor issue in our whole stay.
We decided to eat in the bar/restaurant on the first night, and had no trouble getting a table. (The barman did say that Monday nights were quiet). There was plenty of choice on the menu, and I settled on pâté to start and my wife went for the garlic mushrooms. Both arrived fairly quickly and were plentiful. I had ordered a gourmet burger for main and my wife went for the liver and onion based meatballs ( unable to put the correct word, trip advisor would not permit it), and mash. When they arrived, all I can say is, we wish we hadn't ordered starters. The liver and onion based meatballs, despite only being two on the plate, were the size of cricket balls, and the double stacked burger was accompanied by a pile of really chunky chips. Both meals were very tasty.
We decided to eat in again the second night, and having learnt our lesson from the night before, didn't order starters. My wife went for the Gammon, and I went for the 16oz rump steak. Both were HUGE, and my steak was cooked to perfection.
During the second day we decided that we would stay another night, and despite having to move rooms (our room was booked), were only just down the corridor. Because we had made a spur of the moment decision to stay on, there were no en suite rooms available, so we had to have a room with a shared bathroom, but this was just across the landing. We packed our bags and when we went down for breakfast the lovely lady told us to leave our bags and she would move them for us.
All in all this was a great place to stay, the staff are really friendly and helpful. The food excellent and plentiful, (forgot to say that the breakfast was first class too, especially the sausages). If you stay on a Wednesday night the quiz in the bar is great fun. There are quite a few locals in for it but they all made us feel really welcome, and we did have a good laugh with them. We didn't win, but held our own!
We would defiantly stay here again, and would happily recommend it.

Room Tip: Try and book an en suite, but it's not essential. Be prepared to climb a couple of flights of st...

Please read and beware! Rooms are above the bar, which hosts live music. Spent the first night trying to sleep with ear plugs, whilst the bed vibrated. Thought we'd be ok on the second, but alas the bar plays music which permeates the thin wooden floors throughout the weekend evenings. Whilst I can't fault the general facilities nor the location - its a lovely old Tudor building right in the centre, if you want to sleep before 11pm, you might want to consider another location. Be a quiet bar with nice rooms, or a live music venue - the middle ground just doesn't work.

This was in my view a gem of a find. We came across it by accident. Quite literally in the town center. A couple of flight of stairs but nothing major. We had the en suite room and overlooked the courtyard. Be aware that it is noisy at the weekends, but that is to be expected in a busy pub. The room was perfect. Nice bed, shower etc etc. Clean rooms. Breakfast in the morning was superb and the lady who served us was polite and helpful. We will be returning at Christmas.
Thank you.

One wet monday night in Shrewsbury for work, popped into this pub and enjoyed a tasty burger with chunky chips and a couple of decent pints - good service, quiet but friendly (not a lot going on elsewhere in town either to be fair) I enjoyed it :-)
