“A great place to stay to explore this beautiful town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 9, 2013

We booked this hotel for a romantic stay and to do some Christmas shopping in Shrewsbury. Our stay didn't get off to the best start - entering the hotel it was hard to see the reception desk - hid as it was behind people milling about in the bar and a large xmas tree - it makes you feel a bit awkward when you're stood there with your luggage wondering if you're even in the right place! Once we'd found the receptionist we were advised that our car would be ok to be left on the street whilst we checked in as there would be no traffic wardens at that time of night - very wrong as we got back to our car half an hour later to find a parking ticket!
That annoyance aside, the remainder of our stay was very enjoyable. The room (on the top floor at the back) was very clean and the bed very comfortable. Despite worries about noise from the bar downstairs there was actually none at all and we slept really well. The furnishings were (as others have said) of a shabby chic style. Perhaps if anything the room was too spartan decor wise - but that was a minor issue.
The breakfast room was lovely and the food very nice. Some of the staff at breakfast could perhaps do with a refresher course in hospitality as replacing the surly/sulky looks with a welcoming smile or too would do wonders for the overall experience for guests and there were other staff members there who were aware of this and were a credit to the hotel.
We did not dine at the hotel as the restaurant was fully booked both nights of our stay so cannot comment on the quality of the food. But based on the quality of the accommodation, we would definitely choose to stay here again.

Room Tip: Top floor at the back made for a very good night's sleep.

My husband and I stayed at the Lion + Pheasant for one evening, and we absolutely loved it. On our way up from London, we received a call from the staff asking if we would need a table reservation at the restaurant for the evening. That was an unexpected yet thoughtful gesture by the hotel. Upon arriving, we were warmly welcomed by the staff, who quickly ran through the hotel's amenities and breakfast times. Although there is parking in back of the hotel, we couldn't find it so we parked in a public lot nearby and had no issues.

We stayed in room number 9, which is a double room overlooking a road. Although the hotel placed ear plugs next to our bed, we did not have any issues with traffic noises. The room was decorated in a shabby chic fashion - lots of light, warm colors with comfortable bedding. The hotel provided a variety of teas and homemade biscuits in the room, which were a nice touch. Other amenities included shampoo, conditioner, and a hairdryer. The only slight issue we had with the room was that it was really warm. We could not find the thermostat, so we just slept with minimal bed covers for the evening.

The cocktail bar downstairs is swanky yet relaxed, with a wide variety of cocktails to choose from. The majority of the bars in Shrewsbury close relatively early, so it was nice to have a nightcap in our hotel. Additionally, the included breakfast the following morning was quite tasty. The hotel is located on one of the main roads in Shrewsbury, so it was very easy to walk around the town.

We absolutely adored this little hotel - we can't wait to return!

We loved it here, we read the negative reviews and took them on board but quickly dismissed them. The whole rustic feel to the building suited our taste, and it was rustic but so beautiful, tea and coffee with mugs not silly cups A1 service from all the staff, Hannah who checked us in was lovely. Cannot fault the place, we had lunch here which was so tasty, and stayed late in the bar and were never once made to feel like they wanted us to leave. Cannot fault the place, thank you for a lovely stay.

We stayed at the Lion & Pheasant for three nights so we could see Shrewsbury and the legacy of the late Percy Thrower.
The parking is restricted to say the least but we arrived at a quiet time. Our room on the first night was at the front of the hotel and was noisy at night as they can't double glaze as it is a Listed Building. They moved us without problem and our new room was equally large and this time very quiet and comfortable.
The service is excellent and the food is of the standard you would expect in a top London restaurant. Really good and plenty of it.
We will certainly stay there again but not in a room at the front.

Room Tip: Choose a quiet time to arrive and park. Don't take a room at the front

Had a one nights stay selected for us by our son and daughter in law as a present.....what a good choice!!! Would certainly recommend to anyone who enjoys the personal touch which the hotel provided with their friendly staff. The food was lovely as was the rooms......and the nice white soft towels with homemade cookies gave it the homely feel!!

with close freinds we had a nice break in Shrewsbury are hotel choice this time having been a few times was the lion and pheasant, this hotel has 22 rooms all designed vey nice some a little bigger than others but very comfortable, we stayed on a bed and breakfast basis, the food is realy good, and as it was November the hotel was v,warm. There are a few stairs to negotiate but well worth it as the rooms are very well designed.

Room Tip: Rooms on the road side can be a little noisy,

Spent one night to break up a return journey as we had never been to Shrewsbury before.
This place is an absolute gem. Booked a superior room and it was very good. The whole hotel is decorated with a light and contemporary theme, which works really well. Great bar with a selection of excellent real ales as well as really nice cocktails. Very nice breakfast with good local ingredients. Didn't try the car-park on previous recommendations, but the NCP opposite was very convenient. Highly recommended, we will be back!
