“Great Location - Lovely Hotel - Can Be Difficult To Find!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2014

A nice old hotel in a great central location. The rooms are what you would expect in such a historic building so I would not be too critical about modernisation etc. The breakfast was good the bar was nice and the service was good. Although it is hidden away on a narrow road the staff will take your car away for you and park it at the Bull Hotel a couple of minutes away. Make sure that you give reception early warning if you need to use your car as it has to be fetched from the parking site! If you are looking for a nice restaurant - The Peach Tree (on the left just over the bridge to the East) will not disappoint - good food at reasonable prices!

I have stayed at this hotel several times, but not recently. The first room we were offered, a Mansion House Suite, was not acceptable. The low beams made the room dangerous in the dark, and the lighting in the bathroom was so poor I couldn't see to take a shower. However, a request to Reception soon transferred us to another room, with a four poster bed. Well, it was the most uncomfortable bed I have ever slept in, and I slept appallingly. Breakfast was disappointing, with tinned mandarin orange segments and tinned grapefruit - shocking! The room was so disappointing we checked out a day early, exhausted. This hotel used to be lovely, but has definitely seen better days, it really needs a full refurbishment. However, on a positive note, the staff are lovely and very helpful - give them a hotel to be proud of!

The hotel is ideally situated in the center of town, the staff were very helpful and friendly,
The breakfast very good, the only small complaint we had booked a period hotel,
In the room no information at all of the restaurant menus, Shrewsbury attractions and absolutely no information on the history of the prince Rupert, our room was clean and adequate but by the decor it could have been the metropolitan in Birmingham or any other city. we still would recommend a stay

Stayed here for one night as part of a work trip with a group. The rooms are clearly in the process of refurbishment, with some of our group lucky enough to have lovely new luxury bathrooms, and others faring less well. My twin room was comfortable, and had a fabulous walk-in shower room, and I was lucky enough to have a room at the front of the building, with a view. The room was generally clean, though dusty and cobwebby in less obvious areas like round the plug sockets, which was a bit unpleasant when using them. It's a shame that even with new drapes and the lovely bathroom, older furniture had been retained, in 1980s pine, which looks cheap alongside the new decor. I hope that this is in the process of being upgraded too. I had a good night's sleep, and wasn't disturbed by the promised resident ghost!

I only spent one night in this hotel, but found it to be very dated and in need of extensive modernisation.

Having said that the staff were friendly and it had everything I needed during my stay and it was reasonably priced.

The Prince Rupert is wonderfully located in Butchers Row, Shrewsbury and convenient for everything. The hotel has "evolved" over many centuries - part of the building is 14th Century with other buildings being built and incorporated ever since with connecting corridors and staircases everywhere. It's quirky and great fun (I managed to get lost on the first morning and eventually made it to the front desk via the fire escape and the street!)
Don't expect modern - this is a truly historic establishment. But everything you need is here - comfortable beds, good working shower (even in 14th Century bit), venerable decorations, helpful efficient staff, comfortable bar area and well prepared delicious breakfast. Thoroughly recommended. I thought the cost for such a hotel was very reasonable.

Room Tip: Try to get a room in the old part of the building. It's further from the front desk and the flo...
