“Good food, great service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2013

A really good lunch. Ordered soup and fishcakes. Portion sizes were generous and tasty.
Nice atmosphere, friendly, quick service even though it was pretty packed on a Saturday lunchtime. Will visit again and eat my way through the interesting menu!

“Great pizza !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2013

A rainy Sunday night and we all fancied pizza. We were so lucky to chance upon The Marches in the centre of Ludlow. They had some weird and wonderful sounding pizzas on the menu (the kind of things that send AA Gill into a tail spin - pizza with shredded duck and hoisin sauce ?!), along with a host of other delicious sounding dishes (the roast pork looked excellent). But pizzas it was - we went for a pulled pork and leek concoction, a feta cheese/olives/roasted peppers combo and a ham and pineapple for our daughter (age 7). The pizza oven was right next to our table so we were able to watch the pizzas being made and cooked - unbelievably quickly. They were THE BEST we've had in a long time and if we'd have been staying longer in Ludlow I'm sure we'd have gone back to try something else off the menu.

we believe that a pizza is a bit like a blank canvas, and we are the Andy Warhols of British Pizza, we like to mix things up and throw in te occasional surprise from left field, having said that we've been pretty tame so far, next year we really hope to create a few truly memorable combinations! hopefully we'll see you back her in the future

“Excellent”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2013

My son and I went to this recently refurnished restaurant yesterday evening and I was mightily impressed. The simple 'snack' I had was a a crock dish of melted french cheese with fresh salad and toast. It cost £6 and worth every penny. It had been prepared with care and served on a wooden platter.. I also had 2 glasses of white wine that had been correctly chilled. The waitresses were friendly and pleasant.I noticed other customers food and their meals were also well presented. The restaurant is a long and slender bar so it is not as large as it appears from outside. There was a party or some gathering, down the far end with customers clearly enjoying themselves. However because of the layout of the place we were able to enjoy our own conversation without trouble. It is along side The Castle Square car park. It is in the town Market area so would most likely be busy during market days. There is also an outside eating and drinking area. Thoughfully provided newspapers and some easy chairs gives it a relaxed feeling for a coffee or daytime drink. We shall certainly return.

Thanks for your review, i remember yourselves from the night in question and i'm thoroughly pleased you enjoyed yourselves, it's always nice to see family meeting up for a relaxed evening and exactly the sort of venue we wanted to offer, where you could enjoy good food, drink and the company you're in.
we hope to see you and your son again soon

“Average meal nothing to write home about”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2013

Reserved a table the night before, we a local couple and decided to visit this new establishment. On arrival we were shown to our table and asked what drinks we wanted. We asked what red wines + beers were available and the waitress was at a loss as to what was available. Our meal arrived within 20 minutes but no one at all throughout our meal asked if everything was ok with our meal which we have become to expect with dining in a restaurant. This felt unprofessional and didn't care that we were there. Customer service needs some serious attention here, didn't feel that welcome and probably won't be going back

it's unfortunate you experienced bad service, hospitality is sadly a high staff turnover trade, and since we've been open we've been through a few, we have a core of staff now that are trained to deliver good, informal, relaxed service, but also have taken on new staff recently who won't yet have full knowledge of our range of drinks, or be into the routines we expect.
We do train our staff to be able to list the drinks on offer, though we do not necessarily expect them to pick up on the varietal differences in the wines i am readily on hand myself to offer advise should the customer request it. We do train them to check on food within two minutes of it being delivered to the table so any issues can be rectified speedily, and then they are trained to leave the customers to enjoy their meal in peace, though to remain within the vicinity so they can be called over for any further issues, and to keep an eye out for empty drinks so they can be replenished if necessary.
This training takes time and from the timing of your review i believe you caught a new member of staff on their second shift, however it would have been more useful had you emailed me with details of the date, time, and description of the staff member so i could raise the issues directly, rather than a vague dismissing of us as a business.
it's an interesting headline you title your review with; 'nothing to write home about' it would have been more constructive to write to us, rather than to write to the world on TripAdvisor.

“Really good pizzas”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2013

After a strenuous walk in the Shropshire hills late Sunday morning, what we were really after on our way back to Surrey was a pie & a pint, and had our sights on a pub in Cardington, the Royal Oak, that had been recommended for just that. However, it was not to be, as we arrived 2 minutes after 2.30pm and the landlord was not prepared to be flexible. So we made our way to Ludlow, and found we were also too late for anything in a similar vein there. We chanced upon Marches, where the very friendly staff directed us towards their pizzas (their main menu not being on offer between 2pm and 6pm on a Sunday). Despite that not being what we were craving, the freshly made pulled pork, leek, red leicester cheese and caramalised onion combination that turned up was delicious and thoroughly restored our mood for the journey home. There wasn't much atmosphere at 3.30pm on a Sunday afternoon, but it looked as if it might have some at other times. When we are next in Ludlow we would certainly pop in to find out...

i too love a good pie and can appreciate how good the pizza must have been to get you over the disappointment. we do serve the full menu all day during the busier months but sadly at this time of year have to consider running costs, and when our pizzas are this good and varied we believe their is still plenty of choice.
next time you'll have to come for a full weekend of walking, there's plenty of good walks around Ludlow, and then you can try the rest of our menu out one evening.
