“Great eats and great beers.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 weeks ago

Always a good option to stop off at the Golden ball for lunch or dinner on the way home. Great range of food and beers. Service is always fantastic. Nice surrounding area. In the spring/ summer you can sit out in the beer garden.

You can't go wrong.

A group of four, we booked a deal for four for lunch today. We all chose main course and sweet. When we entered the restaurant we were greeted with a friendly smile and shown to our table. We had a glass of Prosseco and then chose our main course. Two chose the duck breast with plum and ginger. Cooked to perfection with a selection of fresh vegetables. Another chose lasagne. Very filling with lots of meat and a mixed salad. Very tasty. The fourth person chose sea bass. Expertly cooked, moist and tasty with fresh vegetables. Our sweets were excellent too. Two chose the cheese board with Brie, Stilton and Hereford Hop, together with biscuits, butter and chutney and grapes. Another chose tiramisu. Generous portion. The fourth person chose marmalade bread pudding with custard. Delicious. All served in good time and professional manner. We had Rioja wine , reasonably priced. Congratulations to you all and having visited before, we will return again without doubt. Many thanks to alll for your excellent service and value for money.

A very large room with a kitchenette and an excellent olde pub. Excellent value for money. Good tv in the room with a sofa and a good armchair, tea, coffee and a cooker. Well worth staying here. Pub built in 1728.

I stayed at the Golden Ball for a night before attending a conference in Telford. I always prefer to stay in a pub if possible rather than a standard travel hotel - at least you know the hotel bar is going to be good and it personalises an otherwise anodyne trip. I booked the Golden Ball on the basis of my other UK travel bible - the Good Pub Guide - and arrived in the attractive and welcoming pub around 8pm on a Tuesday. It was very quiet but there was still a full menu available, despite me being the only diner. The food was pretty good and the beer was varied and the woman who owns/runs the place could not have been more welcoming and accommodating in a pleasant, understated sort of way.

The room was good, if somewhat basic, but at £60 I was not expecting all the trimmings. The decor had a slight DIY feel but to a certain extent that's what you expect when you go this route. The bed (4-poster) was comfortable and clean; in reality the only 2 things that really matter. The pub is in a bit of a back-alley so there is no noise and I got a very good night's sleep.

After a run in the morning along the old rail trail that the landlady had told me about the night before, I came back to a great English breakfast and a poor English shower - the sort that we are sadly famous for.

All in all, I will take the welcome, the beer, the bed and the breakfast and forgive the shower - for £60 I think that's a pretty good deal

I went for the fish cakes they were so disappointing could hardly taste the fish perhaps I chose the wrong meal as my husband had a pork steak covered in stilton sauce which he said was verg good. But could hardly tell our friends to go there with only one cause ok.

We have just spent two very enjoyable days staying in the Paradise room at this establishment.
The pub is a very old inn (1728!) so don't expect the modern sleek lines of a hotel chain but this place is full of character. Generally when we travel for pleasure we try and stay away from the chain establishments and seek out the more quirky and I'm pleased we found this place.
We arrived fairly late in the evening and were concerned about finding it in the dark but our sat nav took us straight there without the problems of the steep hill encountered by a previous reviewer. The car park is large with direct access into the bar.
The rooms are entered through what looks like an adjoining cottage which makes coming and going very easy.
Our room was clean with everything we needed and the bathroom was vast, again clean and well equipped.
The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming despite the bar being quite busy at the time we arrived.
We ate in the restaurant on one of our evenings there and what we had was good basic pub food and a decent bottle of wine.
The pub itself is quite a steep walk up from the river and the attractions of Ironbridge but is a great base to visit all of the museums in the area. There are other places closer to the bridge but I chose this deliberately because of the free parking and I assumed (and was proved correct) that it would be very quiet being out of the main tourist route. Indeed we heard hardly any noise overnight either from the pub or the streets outside.
At £65 per night B&B this was a really pleasant way to spend a couple of days exploring this beautiful and interesting area of the country.

I've drank in the golden ball over the years always been good beer and atmosphere but never eaten there until now.
Was looking on here for a well reviewed restaurant probably like you are now and at first wanted to book the Shakespeare in Coalport but was fully booked so we rang the ball and they managed to fit us in was impressed with all had a lovely meal we both cleared our plates!
