I had a lovely meal at the Golden Ball last night with my husband as a spur of the moment meal out. We were offered the choice of eating in the bar or the restaurant. We chose the bar as there were several locals in there chatting and drinking, giving it a warm atmosphere.
The menu choices were all written up on a large blackboard on the wall so we sat near there at a window that also looked out onto the small but pretty bear garden.
I had crayfish and avocado with Marie sauce for a starter. Hubby had chunky bread, olives and dips, although he did say they were a little over garlicky. For my main course I had smoked haddock mornay. The fish was only a small portion but came with lovely, slightly cheese flavoured herb crushed potatoes, broccoli and mangetout. Very tasty. Hubby had a large plate of spaghetti in herby tomato sauce topped with spicy meatballs. They too were tasty as I had a quick sample!! I finished off with home-made bread and butter pudding with custard. This can sometimes be stodgy but this particular one was very light and fluffy.
The thing I really liked about the food was that the portions sizes were just right. As they weren't too big I was able to fit in three courses without feeling over full. I think there's nothing worse than going out for a meal and having, sometimes, just two courses and coming away feeling bloated. Well done for getting it just right!
By the time we left, at nearly 10pm, the place was still very busy and as it was dark the little fairy lights on the pagoda down the garden path had lit up, making it look very pretty indeed. It would be great to sit out there on a warmer evening.
The pub seemed to have a 'dog friendly' policy as there were 3 dogs in the bar area for most of the night, but they seemed to be well behaved local dogs, maybe regulars, as the owners and the dogs seemed to know each other, and we never once heard a bark or were pestered by them.
