“A nice little find!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2013

We visited this restaurant last night (Tues) with a voucher. We did have a peculiar experience attempting to book a table but perseverance paid off. On first impressions the restaurant was very interestingly decorated and a delight to sit and eat. The piped music was very authentic (I can't stand a restaurant which plays disco music when themed music is appropriate, so 5 stars there. The waiter was very well versed in the menu and gave us tips on what and how to order (although the waiter is very quietly spoken, he is extremely polite and efficient). We were offered Red Stripe beer as there was no Carling which was ok, but I really do recommend the Banana Bread Beer which is absolutely amazingly gorgeous!!!!! We were given 4 large pieces of watermelon on the house which was a nice touch and very refreshing to the palate. Food is served in tapas/meze type portions and are designed to share, which I love. Highly recommended is the mutton or goat curry, plantain, pork and butter bean dish and do not miss out on the cajun chicken wings for starters, they are the best we've every tasted!!!! They come in small tapas size dishes and do appear to look burnt, but this is just the cajun spices...yummy!!! After feeling a little on the full side we decided to try a dessert between the two of us, which was just perfect and ended a really enjoyable meal. Must go again and maybe will try to get a table when the live entertainment is in full swing.

“A complete and utter disappointment.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2013

We dined here last night. Poor service, terrible value for money and overdone food is the basic summary of our experience.

When we entered we were greeted by the quietest waiter in the world. He was quieter even than HRH Elizabeth II's farts. This guy really needs to be told that if you're a waiter whispering is not the best way to communicate.

There were 3 of us, we had no reservation. Apparently this was a problem. Our silent friend had to go down stairs and make a lot of fuss about us possibly staying here to eat, in the otherwise completely empty restaurant. Shortly before us a family, of 3, also had no reservation, they also were forced to endure the same procedure of checking if it was ok for them to dine. Shortly after us 3 blokes, yet again no reservations, were also submitted to the same scorn at not having booked and checking of availability. In the whole 2.5 hour period we endured here there were no other customers. Why all the fuss about us having a table?!?!?!?!

We were then handed drinks menus... I asked for a pint of Carling (advertised at £1.95 on their website, but on the menu at £2.50).
"Sorry we don't have any Carling."
"OK in that case I'll have a pint of Stones" (also £2.50)
"We don't have any Stones either.... You could have a Red Stripe?" (£4)
"Is it a can?".... "Yes.". Wow great value.

When it came to ordering food we were told that the dishes (priced between £2 and £5.50) were all tapas sized dishes and he advocated sharing with 3 to 5 dishes per person. Heavily skeptical of this claim and having intended to dine here due to what looked like a good value for money menu we opted for 3 dishes each. This amount of food was far too much, 5 dishes each would not only have been financial suicide but would have also been the biggest waste of food since the Danish embassy handed out free bacon in Tehran.

Having ordered we then began to wait. Now, the waiter had asked if we wanted each dish to come as it was cooked, or altogether. Not wanting a bowl of rice followed by a bowl of plantains followed by a bowl of mashed vegetable, etc, etc, we opted to have everything come together. This was a huge mistake. We placed our order at 19.15. It was 20.30 before the first of our dishes touched the table. During our 1hr15min wait for our food we were given 2 slices of watermelon, and the promise, at the start of the last half an hour that our food was "Nearly ready". Throughout all of our prolonged hunger striken wait, we were entertained by our friend the waiter bringing plates and plates of food to the other 2 groups of diners. Including the people who came in 10 minutes after us! When our food finally did arrive both my Snapper and my Jerk Chicken wings were burnt to a cinder.

Having eaten we then began the long wait for our table to be cleared. The waiter walked past us numerous times, whilst we had clearly finished and looked on at him expectantly. It was not until we had to say "Excuse me but we've finished" that he made any acknowledgment of our presence. He then promised he'd be with us shortly. Shortly turned out to be half an hour, throughout which he continued to ferry plates of food to the other diners.

I would never come back here. I would never recommend it to anyone. And If someone told me they were thinking of going I would definitely implore them to reconsider.

Shocking.

“Good x”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2013

We went with a voucher. For the price we paid it was excellent value loads more than we could eat. We took what we left home with us and a nice touch was the chef bringing it up. He had put us some complimentary dumplings in & a bottle of African beer :-) Enjoyed it x

“UK Mama re packaged - Friendly, relaxed... not quite there”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2013

We went on a KGB Voucher and the waiter was well versed in what it covered, what he needed to do and explained the menu with care. We were waited on in a timely fashion and given tips and ideas throughout the meal.
For what we paid on the voucher the meal was good.
The place is eclectic and the when we went very quiet - within five minutes we were the only ones there for almost 2 hours.
The food was well prepared - fresh presented in a variety of dishes - we had more than we could eat really.
Could be a fun place to take a party to.

“Very good”

We enjoyed our visit to this restaurant - the food was excellent and the portions quite ample. The highlight was the African Pepper Pot Soup. An impromptu drumming session rounded off the evening nicely.
