Glad we booked a table as it was Friday and the place soon started to fill up. The service was efficient and if I was forced to pick a fault it would be that there weren't may smiles with that service but hey, a small point.
I'm not that well-versed in Chinese food and tried to avoid all of the things you would normally see on a takeaway menu, which iI generally don't like that much. After the free prawn crackers with an interesting, tasty hot chilli oil/paste, we started with 2 dim sum dishes to share - pork and prawn dumplings and glutenous rice with pork, wrapped in lotus leaf. Both of these were excellent; so good in fact that I'm determined to get back there soon and do the proper 'yum cha' experinece with a nice pot of lotus tea.
I had beef flank from the house speciaities menu for my main, my other half had deep fried chilli chicken. We shared an egg fried rice between us. The beef flank was cooked really well and was nice and tender. The sauce tasted of five spice, really aromatic and pleasant. My other half's chicken was lovely although he'd had enough of the sweeetness by the time he'd finished.
It may sound odd, but what I really liked about this meal was the fact that the portions were not stupidly large. They were just right, so we could do starters, mains and sides without having to admit defeat before we'd finished. It does annoy me when restaurants completely overface you with massive portions!
Between us we had 5 bottles of tiger beer and the bill was very reasonable.
