We have visited this restaurant a couple of times before, including a taster menu. Having seen an offer on Living Social, for a 5 course taster menu for 4 at £69, we decided to treat the kids to a 'different' dining experience.
We have not visited for a while and reviewed some submissions on TA and were a little concerned to see some of the negative contributions.
The booking process was painless and as ever, the staff on the phone were very good with reservations etc.
On attendance, we were shown to an upstairs table which was okay. The room was a little warmer than my previous visit, which was good.
We were asked if we wanted the wine experience, which we declined but ordered a draught lager, vodka and lemondade and a bottle of sparkling mineral water. They came quickly as did the first course, an espuma of lime, rum and muscovado. Okay, flavours good, but not too sure about the quantity due to texture. Next dish, smoked coley and radish/beetroot and cucumber. Good textures, flavour and presentation. Appreciated by all in party. Next course, pig in various formats. Black pudding was beautiful, terrine of 'head' lovely and belly was very flavoursome. Other additions on plate also added to dish, again very well liked by all. At this point, we had to ask for a break between courses, as the first three were a little rushed. We also asked for more drinks, but these were forgotten and we had to ask again. (not a problem, as the servers were very busy and anyone can make a mistake).
Course 4 followed, beef and horseradish mash, which again went down very well. Last course was quaky pudding and rhubarb - very similar to a panacotta/egg custard with a walnut and honey tart (beautiful). I wanted chocolate but this was an excellent course.
To summarise, a good taster menu (as a comparison, we have eaten taster menus in 1 and 2 star Michelin restaurants which were not comparable in terms of VFM and food on plate).
The atmosphere was lacking and the service was too rushed, even though we asked for some extra time. We sat down at 6:45pm and were out of the place by 8ish.
Also think the drinks are on the expensive side but as the food is very good VFM - this balances this.
We would return and would definitely recommend again.
