I called in here at 2pm on a Saturday and ordered one of the all-day vegetarian breakfasts. The proprietor was apparently working alone serving tables and her manner was brusque. There appeared to be only one person working in the kitchen. I sat downstairs and could hear the conversations with the chef. The attitude of the waitress/proprietor towards the chef was frankly appalling. She issued orders like a drill sergeant and spoke to him in a manner that I would describe as bullying if I heard it in my own organisation. This did not make for a very nice atmosphere. The food was a long time coming and to compensate, I was offered a free turkish tea "on the house," although I had not complained. When the food arrived, the spinach component was missing. I asked where it was and only then was I told that they had "run out" and I had been provided with extra mushrooms to compensate. It turned out that the mushrooms tasted "old" and I couldn't eat them. The rest of the meal was Ok. At the end, I was asked if I didn't like the mushrooms. I said I didn't and was offered a discount, which I accepted. I will not go in there again, mainly because I will not support an establishment that treats the staff as badly as that ,within full earshot of customers too.

I was very sorry to read about your bad experience at Xenophily Cafe. Me and my team have worked really hard to create an atmosphere in the cafe that we hope our customers will always remember but unfortunately as you came during our busy period where we were short of two members of staff (despite constantly recruiting) and we were running behind it seems like you will remember it for the wrong reasons. We were aware that we were running behind at the time of your visit and therefore as we do with all customers tried to compensate for this by offering you a cup of Turkish tea I am sorry to see this was not very well received. Unfortunately we had also had a very busy day and the spinach had sold out therefore I offered you the option of replacing this with something else (extra beans, cheese or mushrooms) which you refused. Only after offering you a discount did you finally accept. The mushrooms which you referred to in your message as being “old” were delivered fresh on Saturday morning and I have never received any negative feedback from any customers so I am unsure of the basis of your comments but will look into this further.

My cook who you have referred to in your message has worked with me from the beginning and we have worked up a very good working relationship and he is very happy in his job so I am sorry you felt that I came across in the way you describe. Unfortunately our kitchen is open plan and therefore customers can often hear what is being said in the kitchen and sometimes when we are under pressure to deliver to our customers in a timely manner this can come across as aggressive but I can assure you that when the shift comes to an end and the café is quiet we all sit down and have a laugh and joke about the days events.
