“Good Yorkshire Value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2013

I have stayed here a couple of times over recent years whilst in Sheffield. The hotel is created from part of the former accommodation of the old barracks, the remainder having become offices and a supermarket. Parking is adequate but there it also lies near excellent bus and tram links into the city centre from the nearby Hilsbrough interchange.

Reception staff were courteous, efficient and welcoming, check-in was speedy. The rooms are spacious and comfortable with efficient heating given the vicissitudes of a Yorkshire Spring. The bar was usually very busy, partly due to special events which the hotels hosts in it function suite. The food (taken in the bar) was a cut above standard pub fare but the choice was pretty much in that milieu. Breakfast is adequate and partly self service with a choice of continental and cooked breakfast being available. The cooked breakfast includes several items from a longer list and is cooked to order. My only problem being the toaster which was one of the conveyor-type machines and either undercooked or overdid the toast.

Basically this hotel is good value for money. It can get busy when hosting an event but even on these occasions noise/disturbance is not a problem, it just takes a bit longer to get served in the bar. The staff are friendly and happy to help. These days if I have to stay in Sheffield overnight the Garrison is where I choose to do it.

friendly helpful staff who were very accommodating. the hotel was clean, tidy and comfortable with a good menue and well presented food. The only problem we had was that there was a wedding on at the time so there was a bit of a wait for food, but this was explained to us.

We stayed at this hotel on the nights of the 6th & 7th of October 2013. Our two sons live in Sheffield so we visit every other month. We often stay at this hotel and have undertaken reviews before. Unfortunately on the morning of the 7th of October we waited for half an hour to order breakfast. When the member of staff did finally appear she attended to other guest who came in after us. We left and had breakfast at McDonalds round the corner. I complained to the receptionist who did not respond at all to my complaint. If this continues we will not be using this hotel again.

We are beginning to get recognised by the staff at reception, we have visited so often, usually for the football. Another good stay even though there were weddings on both nights. We manage to sleep through the noise which was not too bad. Never mind Premier Inn advertising a good night's sleep, I slept through all the night, a really good sleep. They seem to have taken up some of the parking spaces and replaced with outside seating whether these are for the smokers or for the summer evenings, it will be interesting if this is used in the winter. As the rooms are non smoking perhaps they should invest in boxes at the end of each row of rooms for the cigarette ends as they are strewn all over the walkways. We ate in the bar one of the nights. An excellent meal, steak baguette and chips. Breakfast hasn't changed in all the years we have been coming, the usual; cereals, fruit, toast and choice of what you want cooked. All in all it's a bargain and that's why the Garrison is always full. We have pre-booked for another trip and were lucky to get a room.

Stayed overnight here as a group for a night at owlerton dog track, the room was lovely and the shower was impressive for a hotel shower.

Everything you need is close, morrisons and mcdonalds are both on the same grounds. The dog track is a 5 minute walk down the road.

The only problem we had was locking the door none of us could work it out, the receptionist came and showed us how to work the door. The bar was nice and the breakfast was lovely too.

In all I would recommend the hotel and will be staying here again next time we go to the dogs.

Booked at last minute due to a family crisis; lovely hotel. Very friendly staff, rooms well appointed, really comfortable bed, spotlessly clean with the most friendly staff. Ate in the pub part of the hotel, massive meals and very delicious, service again faultless. Prices for room and food incredible value for money.

Would definitely use again

Thanks for a delightful stay after a very stressful day.

Loved staying here , for 5 nights. Needed to be close to the high street of Hillsborough and wanted to avoid the trams. Perfect location. The rooms were quiet and had all the ammentities required.
The service was friendly and prompt in all areas.
The food served in the bar in the evening was very reasonably priced and didn't skimp on the portion size.
Breakfast is cooked to order , which means it is fresh and arrived very quickly after ordering.
I would suggest better signage for breakfast to highlight that t has a separate entrance to the bar.
That is my only negative. Everything else was wonderful
