“Unique but tired”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2012

Good - Friendly and helpful staff, pretty central courtyard, unique use of old barracks, useful location - 10 minute taxi into town, or bus/tram from outside Morrisons.

Not so good - Room, bathroom, furnishings, furniture and breakfast room all a bit tired and in need of some updating. Walls/Ceiling were a bit thin. Breakfast included in price and was OK, but nothing more. Thought cooked breakfast options a little bizarre - can only choose 4 items from list, when list 8 items long can understand, but when item list only 5 items long gave penny-pinching impression.

We recently had a two night stay here and was disappointed with the standard of accommodation, although the rate was in line with the accommodation. We had heard that it was about a three star rating but unfortunately so many things did not rate it this high for us. It is long overdue for an update in its furniture, furnishings, bathroom and decor. The bathroom was in need of an update, towels were like paper and the standard of cleaning especially behind the door in the bathroom left a lot to be desired. The bed was not too bad but the pillows, bedding and bed cover had all seen better days.A deodorant spray had been used in the cleaning, probably to mask odors, which resulted in having to leave our window open the duration of our stay as it was very overbearing and caused irritation to our eyes and chest, something management should be aware of. The furniture was very outdated and needed to be updated, the wood work around the desk was very grotty with dirt in between the woodwork. We have stayed in many types of accommodation throughout the world but this one is very poor. In saying this the bar, restaurant area was very good and it has a great ambiance with its history. We cannot honestly say we could recommend this hotel until it has a basic makeover/ refurbishment.

Room Tip: May be stay in the rooms at the back away from the main road as it was a little noisy

We recently stayed at this hotel at the end of April and was very impressed. The character was great with lots of history to the place. The meals were fantastic we had breakfast there and lunch , there was a great deal to choose from for lunch sandwiches to a mix grill which we had and was lovely. we stayed in the family room which was very spacious indeed a double and two single beds no camp beds or bunk beds as you normally find in family rooms. Also a sofa and big bathroom. It was near a busy road but you would not have known at all as it was very quiet. We will defiantly stop there again.

Room Tip: As there are only two family rooms try to book early. There is one up stairs and one downstairs so i...

When in Sheffield we always stay at The Garrison. An affordable accomadation that is both comfortable and relaxing. The staff are very helpful and friendly. The rooms are well appointed. The beds are very comfortable and as the hotel is just off a very busy road once you have closed your door its very quiet. The hotel is a real value for your money.

Room Tip: Every room is of the same standard. If one of your party has difficulty walking ask for a groundfloor...

We stayed at the Garrison Hotel in Sheffield in November as it did state it was wheel chair friendly but to get from the rooms to the bar/restaurant area you have to be pushed up a very steep hill so if you were on your own you would not be able to manage to get from one to the other.

The room was plain but comfortable with tea/coffee making facilities, 2 single beds (was a disabled room they told us) but to be honest there wasn't enough room to wheel a wheel chair around.

There was a flat screen tv in the room.

The bathroom did have a seat in the shower for a less abled bodied person to sit down.

The bar area was nice and so was the meals.

Just to be aware that the breakfast area is back of the bar area, we didn't know where it was and went up and down in the lift and just about t give up when we went around this corner and hey presto the breakfast area.

The hotel is just across the road from a Morrisons and just down the hill there is a McDonalds, also a short walk from the tram stop.

We had a low floor room next to the reception, this had dispensing machines with coke and beer in them.

Also there is not much room for parking.
