We stayed at the Westbourne House without reading the reviews on trip advisor. Basically our experience was similar to those reported before, with a few exemptions. Basically, we were pressured to buy breakfast, even though we did not want it, and it was not included in our rate secured on Booking.com (By the way, the reviews on Booking.com are all very strong. How can that be?). We were repeated asked to buy breakfast and when we said we did not want it, we were told we have to pay for all night's in advance. The woman wanted to know exactly when we were arriving, even thought we were driving a fair distance and it was hard to predict. The second day, I needed to ask the owners something, so I pushed the assistance bell on the inside of the door following the sign posted by the door. When the woman finally appeared, she was irritable and put out that I had rung the bell (again, as the sign and the information in the room instructs one to do). I was told not to push the bell but rather call from the room. Fine, but then don't instruct people to push the bell. The next day, my wife was in the hall to return a borrowed DVD when a guest pushed the bell. The woman appeared, assumed that my wife had pushed the bell and let into her about it. The following day, when we were leaving, and they asked how our stay was, I suggested that the woman's attitude could have been better and that it would have been good if she had not gotten angry and put out with my wife. She defended her self. Said that it was our fault. She was surly angry and acted put out. She acted like we were staying in her house, and that she was doing us a favor letting us stay there. When I suggested that I would not write a good review, got furious, did not think that it was "fair" and said that all of her other reviews were excellent. While all of this was going on, her husband cowed in the corner of the hall and looked at the floor and the ceiling looking like he would rather be anywhere else. But, he did not say anything. These people are simply doing the wrong business for their personalities and apparent interests. If you do not want to be a pleasant and welcoming, if you do not want to be a good hostess, don't go into the hotel business. The story is even more strange. The next day, I submitted a review to hotel.com when asked. It never appeared! My wife and I have both written to hotel.com asking why the review did not appear. Neither of us got an answer. In the meantime, all of the reviews on booking.com are quite positive with an 8.5/10 ranking. How can it be that all of the booking.com clients (except us apparently) had great experiences at The Westbourne House, but the Tripadvisor.co.uk clients have had a terrible experience. It seems that the lure of profits from books bias which reviews are posted and which are not. So, in addition, I will not trust the booking.com reviews in the future but will double check reviews on trip advisor.co.uk or elsewhere before booking.
