“hotel stay 111013”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2013

Stayed for a couple of nights at this hotel again this weekend. I really enjoyed the stay. We had an evening meal in the hotel and was impressed. Bargain break and overall very impressed. The staff in the hotel tried hard to make sure we enjoyed our break.

Business trip:-

Pros
- Nice facade
- Pleasant female reception staff

Cons
-Executive room, drab colour carpet with some stains
-Stuffy room which didn't make for a good night sleep
- Ordered in-room breakfast on each day of 4 night stay, wasn't delivered on one morning!!
- Cooked breakfast with lukewarm hash browns. Burnt toast on one occasion
-Naan bread served with curry was rock hard, how does that get past the 'chef ' ??
-Sandwich served with dry bread
-Face-cloths in bathroom not replaced
- Disappointing response and attitude displayed by staff member when advising of short-falls in serivce.

There is absolutely no excuse for the quality of food that was served from room service. I would suggest that the General Manager carries out spot checks/samples the actual offerings and makes immediate improvements.

As my title suggests, it is a shame that such a grand old building does not live up to expectations once inside. A missed opportunity.

Would not recommend for a business stay.

Dear Bonhomieuk
Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. We were pleased to read that you liked our historic old building. However, we were disappointed that you did not enjoy your room service food and one morning your room service breakfast was not delivered. This is certainly not our normal high standard and we normally receive very positive feedback for the quality of both the food and service for our room service offering. We are sorry if this was not your experience on this occasion. With regards to the carpet in your room, we are currently undergoing a rolling programme of refurbishment and we have highlighted your comments to our Property Manager.
We do hope that we get the opportunity to welcome you back at some point in the future when we can assure you of our best attention at all times.
Kind regards

The building is grand and beautiful. However, it fell below the cleanliness standards that I would expect from a four star hotel. The place was crawling with spiders, they even crawled across the dinner which is vile! The hotel was also uncomfortably hot. I was a business traveler and would not recommend it. We had to ask for coffee at breakfast after waiting 20 minutes. The Hilton is down the road go there.

Dear Shanika G
Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel, we were pleased to read that you liked our historic old building. We would like to assure you that our housekeeping team does clean the hotel to a high standard, however, for some reason, the past couple of months have been particularly bad for spiders and as we quite understand it is not very pleasant for our guests, we have had the pest controllers in to undertake additional sprays to eradicate them. We were also sorry that you found the hotel to be warm as we do have air conditioning available in our public areas. I hope you will accept my apologies for the long wait you experienced for coffee and I would like to assure you that this is not our normal high standard of service. We do hope that we can welcome you back to the Holiday Inn Royal Victoria again at some point in the future when we can assure you of our best attention at all times. Kind regards. Hermann Beck

It's got single glazing and the floors squeak but this hotel makes a change from the usual bland holiday inns around the country. Good restaurant and pleasant bar. Quiet location yet a short walk to the centre.

My husband and I enjoyed afternoon tea in the beautiful, traditional restaurant. We love afternoon teas and have sampled them in many hotels and restaurants, but I can safely say, this one was one of the best. Usually you are served far too many cakes and not enough sandwiches, here there were more sandwiches than cakes and they were delicious- smoked salmon, egg and cress and ham and mustard. There were three small pieces of moist cake each (the lemon drizzle was full of flavour) and a scone each with jam and clotted cream. There was as much tea as we could drink and a gin and tonic each. The waiter, Mike, was polite and very helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon here, it was like stepping back in time.

I really rather liked this hotel. It's high ceilings, stately rooms and unusual features makes it a little different from the usual identikit business hotels. These charms do have their drawbacks however: the main (possibly only) lift feels like something from a spooky horror film, there isn't any AC in the rooms, and some of the hotel looks a bit dated - although the bedrooms and bathrooms had obviously been recently (and nicely) renovated.

Other than that the only drawback I saw during my stay was that one side overlooks a busy road and so can get a little noisy earlier in the evening - although the road was quiet enough by bed time for it not to give me any trouble sleeping.

All in all a really rather nice place although I suspect it might be a bit warm in summer.

Being a business man that stays in lots of hotels I was pleasantly surprised with my stay at the Holiday In Sheffield. I booked on the internet and so was expecting a modern corporate and soulless place however it turned out to be a magnificent old Victorian railway hotel, the station apparently has long since been relocated. The inside still retains its original architectural glories too. lovely high ceilings, paneling, old mahogany bars and large brass chandeliers. My room was spacious, with a large desk ideal for spreading out and working and very pleasantly decorated in a suitably period design. the bathroom was a treat modern with a big bath for a long soak. I couldn't be bothered walking into town and so ate in the hotel restaurant and again I was surprised. I had a really tasty roast duck with seasonal veg and I was so glad I gave Nandos a miss.
Staff were very courteous and attentive and all in all I would recommend this lovely old fashioned Hotel to anyone. Its not you average Holiday Inn.

Room Tip: If the hotel is not full ask to be put in a nice room, especially if staying with the missus. They u...
