Decided to give this place another try ( our last visit was not a great one as per previous review ). Arrived about 7 pm, only one bar person serving and despite very few in the pub took a long time to get served ( eventually another person came to serve but didn`t seem very good at the job ). Food was ordered which arrived surprisingly quickly ( about 10 minutes ). Partner`s belly pork was flabby rather than with the normally expected crackling, my chicken meal included boiled potatoes. I really enjoy vegetables and tried one. It was mostly uncooked ( hard ) other than the outer 2 millimetres or so. I tried several and all were the same. We told a member of staff that the meals were not up to standard and what was wrong with them. The meals were returned to the kitchen and we waited about 15 minutes before they came back again. This time the pork was OK. However, the potatoes were still uncooked apart from the outer few mm. This was getting silly! Why can`t a restaurant cook something as simple as a potato? I returned the meal to the kitchen and after thinking about this for a minute decided to abandon my dining for the evening ( didn`t fancy waiting any longer or eating meat cooked by someone who doesn`t know how to cook a potato ).I asked the staff for a refund for just my meal which seemed to ruffle a few feathers ( the manager`s and the chef`s, not the chicken`s ).Eventually, a refund was given. This is a shame - the Devonshire still has probably the best selection of beers in the North yet in our experience the management seems completely clueless when it comes to serving what is pretty straight forward food. Perhaps the very low number of people in the pub compared to previous visits ( we have been many times over the last 10 years or so ) reflects other people`s opinion of the Devonshire now? In current economic times pubs really need to tempt customers with good service. Food sales can make a big difference to profits. The Devonshire is surely missing out on much potential by not offering this. We will certainly not return unless the current management either ups their game or makes way for someone who can do the job properly.
