Over the years we have visited Yankees countless times. The place itself has been there since forever and our children have enjoyed our visits as much as we have. Over the last year we have eaten there on a pretty regular basis, usually after long work shifts where we have wanted to grab a quick bite and a beer and catch up on our day.
The standard of food, in my opinion, has got progressively worse. The last few burgers we had were really nondescript. And the steak...well I wouldn't bother ordering one again. Jacket potatoes must be a rarity too, as the one I ordered was the size of a prune and twice as wrinkled - it was fairly clear that it had been blitzed in the microwave, really tasteless.
One of the last straws for us was ordering a large salad that tasted completely of sterilising fluid and very wet - I don't think anyone had bothered to rinse the salad under clean water before serving (as having spoken to the waitress a sterilising fluid was used when cleaning salad leaves). At one of the tables close to us on this particular day, a customer found a door key in her ice-cream! (And how kind were Yankees to knock the ice cream from the bill!! Now that is laughable. Although the chef was grateful that he would be able to get into his house at the end of the shift).
Sadly people and places do change. What was once a bright star in our calendar is nothing but a tired and worn out diner. We are at loathe to desert the place entirely but the owners really need to get back on track with the food even if the decor stays for the next 30-odd years.
I wouldn't recommend eating at Yankees but I remain in hope that there are changes afoot and I grow to love this place again.
