“Incredible hotel and service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2013

We booked this as a stop over on the way up to Coombe Abbey near Coventry (already posted on Trip Advisor) and wished we had stayed here for the whole time.
We had heard about the Malmaison hotels and previous experience with other hotels with big reputations we were ready to be disappointed but were we proved wrong!
The room was amazing - very large with stunning decor and huge comfy bed and a very large 'wet room' bathroom with an awesome shower.
The evening meal in the restaurant was incredible. A large menu choice and our waiter left no stone unturned in his efforts to make our evening a memorable one - completely attentive even though he had other diners to look after as well.
The same level of service greeted us at breakfast - very cheery staff with nothing too much trouble.
Two things on the sevice side which were incredible - my wife had a bout of coughing in the bar (drink went down the wrong way!) and one of the bar staff brought over a glass of iced water without prompting. Then later we moved tables and my wife had left her mobile on the table and out of nowhere a member of staff spotted she had left the phone and brought it over, a level of service we have never experieced before.
The only down side was the view outside which overlooked some buildings which have seen better days, however the position was in the town centre so you can't expect to look out onto rolling countryside!
Can't wait to try Malmaison Oxford next!

Room Tip: Possibly check out the rooms away from the main street as they may have a better view and not suffer...

I'd heard good things of the Malmaison chain, but had not stayed in one before. We went, on business, to the Reading hotel. The location, opposite the station, is convenient (more so, self-evidently, for train travelers than those in cars) but not especially pleasant. Rooms (in fact almost the whole hotel) are dark and functional. Food was good, but, even by South East prices, over priced. On a positive note, the staff were universally excellent. Overall, not unpleasant, but nowhere I'd rush back to - for business or pleasure

The hotel staff were very good and attentive but the outlook from our room was dismal. In hindsight we should have asked to be moved. The food however was excellent! The hotel is decorated well and the communial areas were shielded from the unattractive outlook whcih they cant influence so well done to them for doing their best

Room Tip: ask for room at front of hotel

Dear Samholt,

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. I am pleased that you felt the staff were good and the food excellent. It is a shame you felt that the hotels location, in terms of the view we offer let your stay down. As a town centre hotel our location near the train station and right in the retail centre is a huge bonus for most although it does not lend itself well for those hoping to see wonderful things from their window.

I do hope that this will not put you off visiting us again in the future.

Regards

Now, all hotels have websites that tell you how wonderful they are. The Malmaison is no different. And it's probably ordinary boasting on their site. But it's a shame that they pitch everything so high. Because the Reading hotel is very good - even very, very good - but portraying the hotel as excellent in every respect perhaps oversells it a little. So please read this review with care. It may seem critical - but that's because the Mal pitches itself so high that even the small disappointments can be a bit of a problem.

So first of all the booking. We got a really good rate for the bank holiday weekend - by booking the 'Double at Heathrow Stopover' rate we got three nights in a superior room for £257. The website explains that this includes breakfast - but the booking process announces it as a room only rate. As it turns out, breakfast was included, but you start your contact with Malmaison with some confusion. It doesn't help.

Then, the hotel. It has lots of strong points - it really is immediately opposite Reading railway station. But it does fall between two nightclubs. As a lot of people have recommended, we were given a back room. You can still hear (or more accurately feel through the foundations) the music. This isn't Malmaison's fault - except in that they chose the site. But a perfectly restful night you will not get.

Our superior room was excellent. The bed's mattress was good, and the bathroom has a shower and a separate, full size bath. (Full size! You can lie in the bath and read. Without your knees round your ears!) But there's only one bath mat. If there's two of you and one is showering while the other is bathing then either the floor is going to get wet, or you're going have to learn how to drop kick the mat across the room.

But for a hotel refurbished in the last few years there is a bizarre lack of electrical sockets - we eventually found one by the door and another under the bedside table. If you want to charge two phones and an iPad, there's a problem (solved by buying an extension block for £3.99 from Clas Ohlsen). Perhaps more serious is that if you want to boil the in room kettle you have to put it on the floor. That doesn't feel particularly safe to me.

Breakfast (which, as above, did turn out to be included in the rate) is good. It's cooked to order, so there's a bit of a wait, but nothing unreasonable The scrambled egg is freshly made, but fried eggs are clearly prepared in not quite hot enough oil using a mould. You will need to leave half an hour to eat.

And yes, Malmaison have chosen a dark colour scheme and minimal lighting. There's probably a good reason why no other hotel chain has ever done this.

So overall, very good indeed. If I can get the same rate again, I'll be back. But expecting a very (even very, very) good hotel. Not an excellent one.

Having recently got back from an over night stay at Malmaison Reading I felt the need to review and praise the hotel for the quality of the room and the customer service of it's staff...

Having been to several of the other mal's my girlfriend and I were keen to try Reading on the way up to a weekend away in the Cotswolds.

We took advantage of the Room & Breakfast rate which was very good value, the week before our stay we were offered the chance to upgrade (which we did) to the Orient Express room.

I was very glad we chose to upgrade, the room was lovely... very big... HUGE teak bath in the bay window, four poster bed, BOSE surround sound & all the usual Mal touches such as double sinks in the bathroom and a nice sized wet room with drench shower.

In terms of the room price alone we would have been more than satisfied, however it is the "personal" touches & effort of the staff that I think set Mal apart from other city hotels.

The reviews that complain of the hotel being noisey... The hotel is on a main road, next to a train station in a busy high street town centre, what do you expect? There was noise from Revolution next door as we stayed on a Saturday night... however we expected this and it didn't effect our stay what so ever.

Part of the appeal of all the Malmaison's is that they are accessible in city centres...

We didn't have dinner in the brasserie, but the breakfast was very nice & provided excellent value for the selection on offer.

Overall a very good stay... would definitely go back to the hotel but not to Reading! Hence why our preferred Mal is still Edinburgh.

A tip to remember is to park up in the NCP prior to checking in as there isn't anywhere to stop a car outside the hotel... the parking ticket is redeemed upon checkout for £10... Saving £7 if staying over night.

Room Tip: If you get the chance request the Orient Express room, you won't regret it! It is at the front o...

My partner and I stayed in reading for the night to celebrate my birthday. The hotel is brilliantly located right by the station and on top of the bars and restaurants, although dint worry about noise as this wasn't a problem! Staff checking in could have been more friendly and given more info about breakfast / check out etc rather than trying to sell extras! We didn't eat at the hotel only had breakfast, which was pretty good for the continental breakfast you pay for. Well worth staying here over a generic hotel!
