Owner description: An 18th-century house, a 1950s homeThis is a story of grandeur created, dissolved and resurrected - not once, but twice.Basildon Park is an impressive Georgian mansion, surrounded by glorious parkland, which was lovingly rescued from ruin by Lord and Lady Iliffe in the mid 1950s. The house you see today is a re-creation and restoration of the 18th-century mansion. They restored the elegant interior and scoured the country salvaging 18th-century architectural fixtures and fittings. They filled their comfortable new home with fine paintings, fabrics and furniture, which can still be enjoyed by visitors today.

“Lovely grounds”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2013

This National Trust property was used for the Kiera Knightly film Pride and Prejudice and sadly as entry before 12 was only via organised tour and we were pushed for time we didn't get to see inside but the grounds are nice with some woodland walks and there is a café where you can get a cake and a hot drink for £5.The house doesn't look as big as some and as it had been abandoned for a number of years the interior is acknowledged as a reconstruction and the furnishings are not original so given the entry fee I would probably only bother if I were a member and it wouldn't cost anything to get in.

“Beautiful House and park with a dash of Jane Austen”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2013

I have visited this house a few times now and it is always enjoyable. The grounds are beautiful and perfect for a picnic. The house is so elegant and beautifully presented, and the staff are always very knowledgeable. As with all National Trust properties the tea room was excellent.

“Lovely National Trust Property”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2013

This is a unique property, renovated in the 1950's. Although the structure of the house and the formal rooms are traditional period rooms, the private rooms, including the bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens are decorated in the style of the 'fifties. The kitchen is seriously cool - very 1950's Britain. You can tell this house was well loved and enjoyed and it makes a beautiful setting for special events. The cafe is very nice too as are the gardens and grounds.
