“Lunch in town”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2013

Always a good atmosphere and good food and service. Prices for food and drinks are reasonable for a town centre place.

“1st Visit to Browns, The Oracle, Reading”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2013

This was our first visit. It was my partner's birthday. Our day had not particularly gone to plan with a few things going wrong and having to cancel some of our plans so we were feeling a little deflated. We decided to go for a meal and then onto the cinema. It was a Sunday (late afternoon) so things were a little quieter than they obviously would be at the peak of the weekend BUT a little tranquility after our horrid day was what we needed. We chose to go into Browns as the outside looked inviting, soft lighting inside and food/drinks list looked very appetising. We were greeted by Lauren (who remained with us throughout out visit). We briefly explained our horrid day when she seated us at our table. I asked if we could have a corner table, rather than the one she seated us at and yes, this was no trouble at all. She asked us if we would mind getting a drink at the bar while the table was 'cleaned down' and made presentable. We did this - had a good chat with the bar staff making the cocktails (who were very knowledgeable) and generally had a chill before being seated. We had a lovely corner table out of the way and felt comfortable and relaxed, never rushed once during our meal/stay. Lauren was 'exceptional' and made sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. She explained all of our menu questions in detail and we felt very looked after by her. She made the time to chat and be personable which was a nice touch. You usually see staff rushing around, not having the time to take an interest in their visitors but this was not the case here. We have booked again for Valentines next month for another meal. Lauren took our booking and also gave us information on places we could stay overnight (also gave us the phone number). We would like to thank her for making our almost horrid day into a much more pleasant one. Looking forward to our next visit.

“Exceed expectations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2013

We've been hitting most of the restaurants in the Oracle area of Reading and decided to try Browns last night. what swung it was the 'Lobster Linguine' on the menu. I am a real lobster aficionado. I realised that it probably wouldn't live up to my expectations, but the thought of the dish was too tempting and we gave Browns a try.

Before the linguine, I had the Goats Cheese on Beet Root. I enjoy this dish quite often and this was one of my favourite executions. This dish was prepared a bit differently using golden beetroot with pomegranate seed salsa. This dish can be done a bit too heavy for a start, but this one was done nice and light.

The best compliment I can pay the Lobster Linguine is that it was everything I hoped for and more than I expected. Ample lobster, soft creamy subtle sauce, well cooked pasta.

Then, we were just impressed with the Bread and Butter Pudding. 1. Not too massive, 2. Not to stodgy, 3. Brioche base (the best), 4. Plenty of freshly made (not tinned or powdered) custard (pet peeve when there is too little), and 5. Delightful taste highlighted with coconut and cardamon.

Unfortunately, Browns sort of fell on the last hurdle. I thought I would try the Spanish Floater Coffee. It was a disaster. It came too cold. I asked the waitress to simply heat it up n the microwave for me, but she brought another fresh one. Unfortunately, the second was worse than the first. A key problem was that the bartender was putting in way too much cream. The 2nd coffee was 1/3 cream (it should have a modest amount floating on the top). And there was no rum so it had not bite (never mind the rim ring of sugar that a primo Spanish coffee have).

Amateurish disappointment to an otherwise lovely meal.

Hi there

Thank you for your kind comments and taking the time to leave your feedback on here.

We are very pleased to hear you enjoyed the lobster dish and your evening as a whole. We have shared the Spanish coffee part with our team to ensure should anyone order this in the future it lives up to expectations also.

Kind Regards,
Daniel

“Far too pricey for what it is”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

Service was pretty good but I felt that the place had delusions of grandeur as the food is quite expensive but distinctly average. Also felt a bit squashed in as the venue is a bit too small for the amount of tables that they have in there.
