“Beautiful, homely and very atmospheric”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2012

We have visited a couple of times as my husband is a Wellington enthusiast. The house is wonderful, homely and very atmospheric. Excellent guided tours are available and to be recommended. There is an amazing exhibition in the stable block, including Wellington's funeral carriage. An impressive shop and cafe. We enjoyed walking in the grounds and gardens and being able to see the spot where Copenhagen is buried. We find it a wonderful experience and will be visiting again.

“excellent guided tour of the Duke of Wellingtons country house”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2012

Limited opening during the year as family still live here but well worth a visit during July.
Nice grounds and gardens as well as excellent tour of the house.
Small shop and tearoom, large free carpark. OK to picnic in the carpark area

“A good day”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2012

This was a great experience. The guided tour of the house was first class and really opened your eyes into the life of the duke of Wellington. It was nice to visit a lived in house and not a museum.
The exhibition was fascinating and the grounds were attractive.Signage to the estate could have been more instructive.

“Worth a visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2012

Firstly, I would agree with reviewer who had difficulty finding the estate, signage should be better. We last visited in 1974, when from the guide book we then bought I get the impression that the house & estate were open to the public for a longer period. Now only a couple of days in April & part of July & August, but at least it's open every day of the week in the summer open period which is a good thing considering this summers dreadful weather. At least the day we went was dry & the sun actually shon!. I get the impression that the guided tour is for security purposes, otherwise room stewards would have to be employed in each room. I'm not a fan of guided tours, I like to take my time but if it's guided tour only, so be it. The stables exhibition of the Duke of Wellington & his life was interesting as were the gardens & grounds. Don't expect cooked lunches in the tea room but what they did have was excellent value for money. I'd certainly visit again, not leaving so long this time. Overall I'd say it was better than I expected.
