Food overall is quite good, which is probably the only positive aspect of Edamame (which I have to say does count in a restaurant!). The prices are very high, you'll probably spend at least 15/20£ and you'll leave thinking were to go next to get more food. The drinks (I got a japanese drink called calpis) were clearly diluited with water and not cheap at all! I don't mind waiting to be seated but 1/2 hour standing to be finally seated in a corner table were we couldn't even reach the table (it was a group of 4 in a table for 2), well that's just crazy! And on top of that, at lunch time you have to pay when you order and if you don't tip them right away (which is crazy because I don't know yet what kind of service I'm going to get)... Well prepare yourself to have the worst service ever!
Oh I almost forgot, they close at 8.30 pm!
Overall.. terrible experience!

I thank you for your kind words about the food. “Quite good” is high praise indeed from someone who seems determined to stick the knife in to our little restaurant. In posting such a negative review you indirectly call into question the judgement of our many loyal guests who return to us time and time again, not to mention the numerous positive reviews we have received from various national publications over the years.

Your title suggests that if one doesn’t tip in advance one will receive poor service ! This is inaccurate and highly misleading. We operate a pay as you order system to help speed up the service. This time saving method helps to reduce the wait for people who may be queuing at the door. If after the meal a guest feels inclined to leave a tip on the table the staff are naturally very grateful. Whether or not a tip is given has no bearing whatsoever on the service they provide, and you insult my staff by making such an insinuation.
I admit we often face a huge challenge in meeting a high demand for seats with such a tiny premises. However if we did not operate the restaurant in an efficient manner we would no doubt receive complaints from people about the length of queue at the door ! The vast majority of our guests are more than happy to trade off the conventional comforts of more formal dining in order to enjoy authentic food prepared with quality ingredients at very reasonable prices, all in a friendly and buzzing atmosphere.
You claim the prices are very high. At Edamame we use locally sourced pork, free range chicken, fresh salmon, and authentic Japanese ingredients imported from Japan. For example, a generous portion of marinated fresh salmon fillets with a bowl of rice and home-made miso soup is sold for £9.00, including complimentary Japanese tea. In most people’s judgement this represents extremely good value, and any of our main complete lunch sets (ranging in price from £7.00 to £9.00) is usually enough to satisfy all but the most voracious appetites. Where do you get your £15/20 figure from ? The average spend per person at lunch rarely exceeds £10, and at dinner £13/14. These are facts.
The calpis drink is made from a concentrate that is diluted with water. My staff are careful to mix it to the recommended 1:5 ratio. It’s possible that it wasn’t mixed exactly as it should have been on the day you visited, and if that was the case then I am sorry.
It's true we take last orders at 8.30pm. Our restaurant is located in a mainly residential area of Oxford, which is protected from normal commercial activity by the very restrictive lease that applies to our premises. We are sorry if this does not meet with your approval but it is out of our control.
Overall we are saddened that you had such a distressing experience. It was certainly not our intention to cause you so much grief, and we hope you will find culinary satisfaction elsewhere.
