A favourite haunt of mine with friendly staff and good food. I brought my American relatives here last week and was asked how best to describe the Oxford Retreat. I said probably a laid-back, quirky gastropub. The river setting on Hythe Bridge with weeping willows is charming and the interior design of candles and cosy inn furniture is really well designed.
They can always be relied upon to show the latest sporting event and you can choose to watch it in the pub at the front or the more refined dining area. It's the perfect place to enjoy a pub atmosphere with a nice crowd of people.
It seems to be popular with a wide variety of ages and there are nice additions like boardgames which you can play over a drink with friends.
The food is imaginative and delicious with risottos, seafood, gastropub specials and the famous and always satisfying Oxford Retreat burger with the best chips I've ever had.
Service is always friendly and polite and we have never been disappointed.
Only slight criticism is that on several occasions they have run out of essentials for cocktails (such as orange and mint) so we have been disappointed on occasion but, overall, a great place and well deserving of a visit.
