Description: You've planned an afternoon punting a la Sebastian Flyte - you've got the boater, the stripy blazer, the wind-up gramophone and the obligatory teddy bear, but whoops, forgotten the picnic. Instead of eating sweaty sandwiches, plan your punting excursion round eating at Cherwell Boathouse. Owned and run by the same family for the past 30 years, Cherwell Boathouse, as its name suggests is right on the banks of the Isis (Oxford speak for the Thames) in a truly scenic spot. The restaurant is small and intimate with a beautiful terrace but not twee. The atmosphere is buzzy and lively and there is a huge range of age groups. However, if you are truly set on a picnic, the restaurant will organise a hamper for a minimum of 15 people if you pre-order. What's cooking: Fish Terrine with a light crab mayo; fragrant Thai broth, crispy sea bream with courgette and carrot tagliatelle on a bed of noodles with a tomato and caper jus; baked breast of mallard with a cranberry compote; white chocolate and ginger torte; chocolate layered crepe cake.

“Disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2012 via mobile

Had a really disappointing meal here last night which is such a shame as we were all looking forward to it. Apart from one young male waiter the staff were miserable and obviously didn't want to be there. The food was ok but forgettable. We wont be rushing back.

“New menu - now head and shoulders above the rest!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2012

As a romantic retreat with gorgeous, French-influenced food and friendly service, this place can't be beaten. We visited for a birthday treat and discovered a new menu has been introduced for October and it is simply brilliant (menu not yet updated on their website at the time of writing). The flavours were just exquisite! My starter of cold sliced pork belly with a ginger and sesame drizzle was superb and the Barnsley chop main course even better. The French restaurant manager was very informative about the food whilst amusing with anecdotes. Can't praise this place highly enough - great location, atmosphere, staff and you can go punting on the river after lunch there too! (We loved the sign on the boathouse that said 'unattended children will be captured and sold to the circus' :))

“Gorgeous restaurant, amazing food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2012

I've lived in Oxford for 5 years now and only ventured to this place for the first time last weekend. I've been missing out all this time! Possibly the best meal I've had in Oxford. The atmosphere was lovely, staff very friendly (especially when we requested the cat resting in the warmth of the reception area was turfed out before my cat-phobia mother-in-law spotted it!) and good value for money. My only complaint was we had to wait 30mins for our table, which seeing as we'd booked, seemed poor. However, we received drinks on the house while waiting for our table and the food & service more than made up for it. I will definitely be going back again soon, and I can't wait to try it in the summer when you can sit outdoors.

“Location, location, location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2012

Part of a punting station on the River Cherwell, the Boathouse restaurant rates high on atmosphere. The food is competent, but nothing to write home about, and portions seem relatively modest, although the prices are also contained. A cured duck plate with kohlrabi slaw was tasty, but our cold tomato soup was rather severe. Roast lamb was correctly cooked, but the accompanying vegetables were bland and uninspiring. Service is what one might expect in a student joint, desultory, and the waitress was unfamiliar with the wine list and how to serve the offerings, somewhat disappointing when some wines cost well over GBP 200. Best perhaps on a summer night when the slightly draft quarters do not present a problem. Tables are also rather close, so if you want to have a romantic dinner you may be inhibited by the proximity of other diners.
