Description: Browns Oxford, set near the centre of ‘that sweet city with her dreaming spires’, was the second branch of Browns to open. It has become a landmark in the city, an institution not quite as ancient as the university’s world-famous colleges, but one which has nonetheless stood the test of time. For many years the building was a Morris garage, which we converted into one of the first of its kind: an English brasserie. And the scene out of the windows is also pure England: across the road is the church of St Giles, the church hall and a characterful terrace of 18th century houses. But we’re also just a 5 minute walk away from the busy centre of the city.

“Only Just Average”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2013 via mobile

We live within walking distance of Browns and have eaten there before. Poor quality Steaks for the price. We ate at Rick Stein's Bistro in Padstow a few weeks earlier and had an amazing steak for less money than Browns charge. Service is slow and indifferent and quite a few items on the menu unavailable. Not impressed.

Dear Nemesis101,

I would like to thank you for your feedback regarding your visit to Browns Restaurant in Oxford.

I regret you we not happy with the quality of our steaks. We were aware of the issue and as a result changed the suppliers.

As for the pricing point I am afraid they are done centrally thus can only pass the comments on the subject.

Regarding the speed and quality of service I would like to assure you we have been working hard and conducting adequate training thus I am confident to say that improvement is obvious.
I would love to believe you will give us another chance to prove that we are more than average.

Look forward to seeing you again.

Regards,

Medea De Brum

“Avoid the cocktails”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

Haven’t visited Brown’s in Oxford for a while but decided to call in for a couple of cocktails one Saturday night. My partner ordered the cocktails at the bar expecting the barman to fetch them over; instead he mixed them in front of her and took about one minute to make a Black Russian and a Passion fruit Daiquiri. The cocktails cost £13.90 and were the worse cocktails we’ve ever had.

As well as the disappointing cocktails, my partner was partially knocked off her bar stool by a waiter as he dashed by our table; he then proceeded to move another couple and their table and stools so that he could have unhindered access to the kitchen. Why create a bar area if your staff are going to charge through it every few minutes carrying either hot food or dirty plates?

Will not be returning to Browns again. Take our advice if you want cocktails go round the corner and visit the bars/restaurants on Little Clarendon Street or Walton Street. Can't comment on the food as haven't eaten here for a while.

Dear Windmerpoole,

Many thanks for taking time to share your experience of Browns Restaurant in Oxford.

I regret your visit ended up being so unpleasant. We are addressing our cocktail waiter training issue and would like to assure you we are back on track.

As for the restaurant lay out we do our best to make it comfortable for guests and workable for staff thus I regret we failed you on this occasion.

I still hope you would allow another chance and visit us in the future.

“Food just one step up from Macdonalds”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

I was brought up in Oxford and since the 1970's Brown's has been an Oxford institution. It still has a lovely atmosphere and good service but the food is truly awful. My wife ordered chicken pie which had nothing in it. There were literally two pieces of chicken in it. Someone else on another table was complaining that their steak pie had no filling. My fish and chips was about the same standard as Bird's Eye frozen meal, except I would have microwaved mine properly. We ordered two meals and neither came with vegetables. The food is obviously microwaved and you are not kidding anyone. This is just about one step up from KFC or Macdonalds and the nice bentwood chairs and surrounding don't make up for that. Brown's - you are going to have to try harder.

Dear Andimanas,

Thank you for taking time to share your recent experience of Browns Restaurant in Oxford.

It is encouraging when our guests know the history of the place and have been coming back for so many years. I do however regret the aggression that has been expressed towards us.

We may make mistakes and disappoint on delivery of service or product in some instances as all catering business do, however we are very open minded and always act upon constructive feedback. We take pride in what we do and are not ashamed to admit to occasional slip ups. This is because we genuinely care and want to improve whenever and wherever possible.

As the service you experienced was so professional and nice it is very regrettable that you did not mention your extreme disappointment to anybody while in the restaurant and preferred to Talak about it on line.
As for microwaved Fish and Chips I will beg to disagree as it is one of the most popular dishes and virtually never goes wrong which many would agree is a strong statement to make about food in the restaurant but we know what we do well and what can go wrong sometimes. Our Fish and Chips are golden, crispy with very light batter and moist fish and they are always like this. They are not microwaved and everybody would agree no guest would eat soggy Fish and Chips in the restaurant anywhere.

As for the pie, you have commented on the quantity of chicken in it. It hardly suggests anything about the quality of the dish thus can not see the connection between fast food chains and us.

Should you feel you need to talk to us please contact us as we are very approachable and willing to listen.

Regards,

Medea De Brum
