“Cannot beat the location, rates - excellent”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2007

My sister and I planned a weekend in Oxford, just staying one night. Usually I'm very organised and research available accommodation but I ran out of time and hurridedly booked St Michael's solely based on location.

I have to say it was the best snap decision I've ever made. The B&B is located less than 10mins walk from the Train Station and very easy to find. It's located right in the centre, just one street away from the main shopping drag, information centre, pubs/cafes etc but in a quiet street.

The room (we stayed in a twin) has enough room to make it comfortable, TV, tea/coffee making facilities, plenty of storage, own little sink and the MOST comfortable beds ever. We did not have an ensuite but that was not a problem. Toilet/shower/room was very clean and we were also provided with shampoo/conditioner. For those interested in decor, it may not be modern but was definately charming and homely. Breakfast was good - plenty of cereals to choose from as well as a cooked breakfast. The hostess was lovely and allowed us to leave our suitcases the day of our departure while we toured the town waiting for our train. This was a bonus as Oxford is notorious for not providing public places to store luggage (the train station does not have this).

With regards to value for money - This was the cheapest by far than any other B&B I looked at so the value was excellent.

The only downside is to get to your rooms you do have to climb stairs which are steep and narrow so would not suit those who cannot carry suitcases (I did not see a lift).

Apart from that I definately recommend this B&B to anyone. The only people I would not recommend it to are those who want something definately up market, not that this B&B is dingy, it's very much your grandmother's home.

This guest house is extremely well located in St Michael's street right in the heart of the historic town centre. It's also very inexpensive - just £35.00 for a single room, £50.00 for a double. So what's the catch? Well, it's fairly basic, furnished rather like an old fashioned student room - in cheap, miscellaneous style - and the rooms are not en suite. But the bed was very comfy and there was a basin, a kettle and a small tv. The shower room was a bit more modern and they provided shampoo. The breakfast room is bright and clean - and the breakfast itself perfectly fine - nice yoghurts, average bacon and eggs, weak coffee. Breakfast isn't served till 8.30 which seemed rather late. Friendly rather casual owner. Excellent, no frills budget option - I'd certainly stay again.

  • Liked — Excellent location and good value
  • Disliked — It was quite basic but that was reflected in the price
