“EXCELLENT HOTEL FOR VISITING OXFORD”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2009

We stayed one night and can really recommend this charming hotel. Quiet and comfortable room, very good breakfast and only 12 minutes by bus to the citycenter, where parking is "impossible". In Oxford we had a very good meal at the Thai Restaurant Chieng may;

We stayed at the Remont after finding it at No 1 on the Trip advisor site and it definitely deserves the acclamation. We found the service to be very friendly, the hotel interior very modern and clean, breakfast was well catered for all needs and the hotel room itself was lovely. The only drawback was that it was a hot weekend and there was no way to keep the room cool without opening the windows and therefore you would hear the road noise. There is a fan in the room but this just moves the warm air around. Overall had a good nights sleep anyway. Would definitely go back and stay here.

Taking my visiting parents around the UK meant that we had to find rooms suitable for 3 adults--not always an easy task! But the Remont delivered, with a lovely room full of character and cosiness. Bear in mind the lift doesn't always work--it tried to lock us in--and the top floor requires taking the stairs anyway, but once you've made it to the room you won't want to leave anyway! Greeted by lovely warm decor, soft beds, and tea and biscuits. The breakfast is labelled "buffet" but is actually a full English if you want it, and served in a sunny room by attentive staff. It is a bit out of the main way, but is only a short bus ride from the centre of town.

One word of caution: there are two different bus companies in Oxford, and buying a day pass to one won't get you on the other. I recommend the blue Stagecoach, as the drivers are nice and friendly and help you out when you get hopelessly lost, while Oxford Bus Company apparently enjoy shouting at hapless tourists. (Honestly, was shouting at my mother really necessary? But that was not anything to do with the hotel--just make sure you pick the right bus to get there!) The 2 or the 7 should get you out to Squitchey Lane, where you find a building that looks like a house, and that's where you want to go! The buses do fortunately run quite late, so you can head into Oxford and enjoy yourself and still get back to the hotel.

There’s plenty to like about Remont, but still some work to do to become the boutique hotel it aspires to. At present they are a very good B&B let down by an uncomfortable bed and no evening dining facilities which makes their rack rates a tad high. That said, and if we ignore the poor night’s sleep down to the tired mattress, this is a very nice place to stay. Remont has free parking (very important for Oxford), a pleasant garden, reasonable location, scrupulously clean rooms, and welcoming communal areas all wrapped in superb friendly service. We really liked Remont, and feel really bad (a bit like kicking a puppy) in criticising such a friendly operation, but whilst it’s a nice place it’s doesn’t quite match up to their own billing. For more info, the guest house’s own website http://www.remont-oxford.co.uk/ is fairly accurate and worth a look.

LOCATION – Remont is situated in Summertown about 3 miles outside Oxford on the busy A4165 Banbury Road. Oxford centre is a £1.85, 15 min bus ride from a stop less than 100 yards away. The bus service is frequent and reliable.

ACCOMMODATION – Remont has 25 ensuite bedrooms which are decorated to a modern contemporary clean design and has only been open since 2006. All the rooms are well decorated, equipped with hairdryer, wall hung flat screen LCD digital televisions, tea & coffee making facilities with biscuits, complimentary bottled still & sparkling mineral water, modern ensuite facilities with thermostatically controlled powerful mixer showers using the new economical Raindance technology system. They are reasonably small, but thoughtfully laid out to make good use of the space. The place is a wireless hotspot and so free broadband is available throughout, and if you don’t have a laptop, then there is even a computer for use by the guests in the reception area. The downside was that the room we had was too hot, very stuffy and the mattress was truly awful. Since they were presumably new in 2006, either they had not worn well, or this was an area that false economy savings have been made. The end result was very little sleep and an otherwise positive experience somewhat marred.

BREAKFAST – Cereal, fruit juice, fresh fruit and yoghurt was available to serve yourself prior to the main event. A choice of full English, continental and most variations between the two is available in a buffet together with tea, coffee and toast. The food was well cooked, good quality and in more than sufficient quantities. All in all, a great start to the day. A point to note is that whilst the breakfast room is light airy and pleasant, it wont pass muster as a restaurant if the aim is to turn Remont into a true hotel.

This is a well run operation that does most of the important things to a high standard and most of the minor ones well. If they can sort out the beds and the room ventilation we would certainly go back.

Really nice! Looks like a regular house but is a tardis as is surprisingly large. We had booked the small double and I was surprised how big it was, I was expecting to skirt round the edges of the bed all the time but it was fine. The room also had a patio door leading directly outside so good for smokers who need to pop outside. Fantastic shower, one of the best I've been in in ages. Also the curtains are fab, a really soft suede material. All in all, really nice simple decor. Only downside is the location, nothing but residential houses in the near vicinity, but then that is reflected in the price.

Even though the Remont is outside Oxford's city center, it is walking distance to several nice restaurants and shops, so you won't feel isolated. And Oxford is a busy (and potentially noisy) place, so it's good to go into town on the bus (which operates often--we never waited more than 5 minutes), do your thing at the university/shops/sights/pubs, and then return to peace and quiet. Also, parking in downtown Oxford is a nightmare--spots are hard to find and parking lots are obscenely expensive (the parking lot owners must be real millionaires!). So leave your car at the Remont (if you're driving) without worries. Also, if you are using Oxford as a base for travels in the general area, Remont is not too far from the motorway (It took us under 15 minutes to get to Blenheim in our rental car, for example). Remont's rooms are spacious, and the bathrooms were well-appointed. The breakfast (included) was standard English breakfast, buffet-style--enough to eat to carry you through the day without having to stop for a serious lunch. Don't waste your money on a downtown hotel; stay here, and spend what you save on some of the great things offered in Oxford's shops.

We didn't know what to expect from the Remont but went based on the many positive reviews on Tripadvisor. We were not disappointed: a cross between a guesthouse and a hotel, the Remont is perfect for people looking for a modern, scrupulously clean and quiet hotel on the main route into Oxford. From the contemporary decor to the free high-speed internet which can be accessed via a terminal in the lounge area, the owners have tried to think what guests want from a stay. Although some people will be concerned by the lack of restaurant and bar facilities, if this is not a must then don't let it put you off. There is a huge range of restaurants in Oxford catering for all tastes.
Parking is very good (coming from someone obsessed with their car who always has to have an end-space!) and there is a bus stop just outside, with buses running every few minutes, 7-days a week. It cost us £1.80 each way to the centre and takes about 7 minutes. You can eat out in the evening and the bus will drop you outside the Hotel (runs till very late most days (ask for the Squitchey Lane stop on the way back).
The breakfast in the hotel was simply outstanding, a help-yourself buffet with cereals; fruit; croissants; fresh breads; juice; all the usual hot english breakfast stuff and the most gorgeous coffee served to your table. The staff were so friendly and helpful, topping up your drinks and ensuring that your table stays clear of dirty pots. All the food was replenished as soon as it ran low and the dining room itself is ultra modern and fresh, looking out onto the garden/patio area.
One final point which to us was important- the hotel is sooooo clean. We could not believe how well-maintained and fresh everywhere was. The beds were very comfortable, the room a little warm at night, but OK with the window open and the radiator off.Overall, we will definitely stay here again when we come to Oxford and bearing in mind the above points about lack of bar and restaurant, you should give it a go. A great find!
