“Night to remember in converted prison!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2013

We stayed here on Saturday night to help celebrate our friend's birthday.
Our Sat Nav didn't like the one way system in Oxford town centre so it's best to rely on the directions from the hotel's website.
On arrival we parked our car out the front of the grand old castle entrance, where we were welcomed by staff, and we walked into the reception area - we were welcomed in and ushered to sit down to check in. We had requested a parking space (£25) so a valet helped my husband collect our bags then took the key & parked it in the underground car park.
We were given a room in the House of Corrections which was found once we had walked through a walkway where we saw the real metal steps and walkways of the prison like we saw on Porridge and other prison tv shows.
Our room was really authentic but beautifully refurbished into a real classy boutique style luxury hotel room.
We met our friends in the cocktail bar (3rd floor), which was beautifully furnished, & had a few drinks before we ventured out to check out the local area.
Literally within a very short walk you can find Prezzo Restaurant, Living Room, Pizza Express, several bars and pubs including a gay pub and a Wetherspoons. Then off the main street we found several other bars and clubs so I can safely say this is an ideal location has something to offer all ages, tastes and budgets.
Breakfast was in the Brasserie - we had to wait a few minutes to be seated in a side room which was very quirky. We were invited to help ourselves to a range of fresh fruit, cereals, pastries, yoghurts and juices before having tea/coffee, toast and choice of hot breakfast from a menu served to us. It was all of very high quality and very tasty.
This trip cost us more than the average hotel room but we got a luxury room in the most memorable surroundings; so felt it was worth treating ourselves - xx

Room Tip: We got a tour of our friends rooms & they looked equally good as ours.

Absolutely fantastic hotel, the rooms here were absolutely beautiful. The hotel is quirky yet very comfortable.
We stayed in a 'cell room' which boasted amazing en-suite facilities. The roll top bath and monsoon shower were incredible.
You are well looked after at this hotel, the room facilities, the breakfast and the staff were amazing. The hotel bar catered for all and we enjoyed incredible cocktails.
The hotel is in an amazing location, right in the centre of Oxford within walking distance of all attractions in this beautiful historic city.
We can't wait to return!

Room Tip: Stay in a cell room - well worth the added cost.

What started out an exciting experience turned out to be disapointting. The hotel itself looked great and the inside is low atmospheric and impressive. Checked in, though the room for our friends was 45 minutes late getting ready, not great. When you come out the lift and are in the old prison landing area which is awesome. The room itself was 2 cells knocked into 1 and quite quirky and interesting.
The down side for us was the room was £255 which did not include breakfast which is disgraceful. Though it was impresssive as a building it is not worth the money they charge. When we asked about breakfast we could book for £12.95, yes £12.95 for breakfast, or just go down in the morning and pay £14.95!! Not sure why £2 more and doubt they could ever justify these costs. Added to this the cooked breakfast was so so to be positive about it. Add to this when we went to check out they tried to chared us £355 for the room, it went up £100 overnight, and we had to show them the booking confirmation before they accepted their mistake. The other down side was the bed was one of the most uncomfortable I have ever slept in.
Overall I would say avoid this hotel as not worth the money they charge.

We stayed for one night having booked dinner at Le Manoir.

I have also stayed a number of times on business. The hotel is very well located, modern, and different. A room in the prison block tends to have curved ceiling, and prison doors! We had a room in the correction wing this time. Exposed brick work and curved walls. Decent size room, but maybe a little small on the bathroom.

We did ask if there was a room in the prison box - however, that would have been £35 to upgrade. Not worth it. Wifi is available for all.

I stayed at the Malmaison Hotel in mid January. The hotel really looks exactly as it does in the pictures. I was convinced to stay here because of a co-worker who wanted to have a different experience. I scare easily so the dark hallways and very prison like atmosphere was a little much for me personally. However, other than that the hotel was very clean and maintained very nicely. I took plenty of pictures as my dad works in a prison in the United States and was very interested in seeing how a prison was converted to a hotel. I also enjoyed breakfast that came with the room -(bb rate). The waffles with bananas were delicious. The bartender Josh, was amazing. He was very social and had excellent customer service. It was a great location as it is close to alot of restaurants and bars which made for a great business trip. Only negative I can think about is that the room card kept deactivating even though I never had it near a cell phone. But the front took care of it immediately. Overall I enjoyed myself and I am very glad that I stayed there.

The location for the hotel is fantastic and well worth a visit if a little expensive, but the service does not match the hotel. Whilst the staff try hard some do not speak great English which sometimes leads to problems, which is a real shame as I would love to stay more often.

I booked a surprise for my partner, i had booked a table for dinner as well as a night in the hotel, the restaurant food was good, service however was bad, waited 45 minutes from my starter to my main course, the starter plates weren't cleared until the mains were brought out, the dessert that i ordered came out wrong and my partner ate hers as i was waiting.HOWEVER The Reception staff were amazing and the hotel room was lovely, i had asked for flowers in the room and i couldn't have asked for anything else there were a few marks in the bath which the general manager was very responsive over and paid our tab for dinner, i would recommend the hotel and food but service in the restaurant could be a lot better for the caliber of hotel.
