“Amazing hotel conversion from former prison”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2013

We were here in Decmber 2012 and were amazed at this conversion. The hotel is a luxury boutique style hotel in the centre of Oxford right next to Oxford Castle. There are many restaurants close by. The architecture at the hotel is brilliant as many of the original features have been retained. Rooms are in the old cells where two or three cells have been combined to make a luxury room. If you are chlostrophobic the rooms may be a little oppressive as they still have the original high windows but suites are available.Very nice decor throughout the hotel. 4 / 5 star. Not particularly suited to young children just re logistics of pushchairs etc. The hotel is quite expensive but it was a very memorable stay and we will definitely go back. One of the most unique places we have ever stayed.

Room Tip: Check with the hotel if you want a room with a big window or upgarde to a suite. Standard rooms are...

We visited this hotel just before New Year 2012.. I was a little unsure how I would feel as it was a converted prison. We stayed in a side building for this reason. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised, it was well decorated and had a really peaceful atmosphere. Check in was quick and efficient, staff were pleasant throughout our stay. We looked at the converted cell area in the hotel, these actually looked really nice, may well try one of these next time and there will be one.
We didn't have breakfast as it was far too expensive and visited a the Art Cafe a few minutes from hotel, it was Organic and they also catered for
Customers requiring Gluten Free food, definitely recommend this. Overall the price for the stay was warranted but the parking was costly this being £25.00 for one night.

This hotel is based right in the centre of Oxford in what used to be the prison. The conversion is amazing given the previous use of the building. We booked a superior double room which was located in the new road block rather than a cell, which we would have preferred. That said, the room was amazing. Huge bed, roll top bath and huge bathroom and lots of extras. We didn't opt for breakfast as we thought it a bit pricey at £14. There are loads of caves and restaurants nearby. The dining room did look nice though. We did try a drink in the visitors room bar which was lovey and service was good. The only negative would be the check in/ out. It was rather slow and inefficient. We even traipsed too our room through the meandering corridors only to find the room key hasn't been programmed!! Other than this minor niggle I would return tomorrow. There is parking at the hotel for a substantial £25 but anyone who frequents will know that this is the going rate for city parking. We used one of the park and ride services which was really good.

Room Tip: If you want to stay in a cell you need to book one of these rooms specifically

Spent a Sunday night in one of the cells, fabulous hotel, friendly staff, great for a romantic getaway. Restaurant was great with food cooked to perfection.

Lovely toiletries, roll top bath and a lovely city to boot.

My only criticism, was that our room was a little too hot, but other than that, brilliant.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for a cell room if you want to stay in one of the cells

I stayed here last night the18th December 2012, what lovely hotel, modern, quirky. Could not have asked for more. A little expensive but worth every penny! For people who was a great nigth sleep I would highly recommend asking for ground floor, only 5 rooms! Excellent nights sleep and and excellent venue!Would definately return.

Room Tip: ground floor for quieted night as only 5 rooms upper floors have more rooms do more doors banging.

This hotel is quite stunning. It's built in an old prison, a very old prison, and has a very unique charm to it. Probably one of the coolest hotels I've seen. The decor is very nice, tasteful and current. It also is in a great location, walking distance to most any location in Oxford.

However...

For the US$500 price tag they serverely lack some qualities. The bed is the worst I've ever slept (or didn't sleep), seriously the worst. The food through room service is mediocre at best. I can get over the food but they'll need better beds to get my business again. I mean, isn't the sleep part the most important?

The good: An attractively decorated large room, with separate bedroom (I had an upgrade so am unsure what I would have gotten for the price originally paid). A 15 minute walk from the train station. Conveniently located to the attractions of Oxford.
The not so good: A long wait to check-in, with no acknowledgement from staff during the wait, or once served. Staff at the door and in the bar weren't very friendly. I saw very few people about - staff or visitors - making for a feeling of emptiness. Whilst this hotel is nice to look at, it doesn't feel inviting or envoke a sense of warmth/confort.
Recommendation: Stay here to celebrate a special occassion; otherwise, from other reviews I have read, I'm confident there is just as nice accomodation available in Oxford at a more reasonable price.
