Owner description: Think about those books, the ones that you'll always go back to, those moments in life where you think 'that's a bit like that chapter' or 'you're just like that character', those are the stories we love. We don't just want to leave those books on the shelf though, we take them down, hand them around, share them out and bring them to life. All over Oxford we find unusual spaces - these stories aren't set in theatres so we don't put them there. Castles, antique mirror tents, college gardens, bookshops and factories... we'll go wherever the stories take us, and so far we've taken over 500,000 people with us. From the thousands of children who've told classic stories in new ways through our education programme, to our professional actors and directors, you're always most likely to find us lost in a good book. 18 years, 54 shows, half a million audience members aged 5-95...we are Oxford's own Creation Theatre Company.

“Antony and Cleopatra - fantastic!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2011

Having seen Creation Theatre's excellent Christmas productions in the past, I took advantage of an offer and got tickets for Antony and Cleopatra at the Said School outdoor amphitheatre. I was pursuaded to take my 12-year-old nephew who was desperate to see some 'real' Shakespear but worried that he might not 'get' a tragedy rather than the comedy I would probably have chosen otherwise. He got it in spades, and is now badgering me to go to see more Shakespear and more Creation Theatre.

We both thoroughly enjoyed this production, which was fast-paced, imaginative and made the most of the venue. The cast even came up with the odd tweak when things weren't quite right, drawing us into the plot.

I cannot thank the company enough for showing a nearly-teenager the magic of Shakespear, and giving me a theatre-going companion for years to come. If you can, go!

“Too Creative”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2009

Creation has been entertaining in Oxford for over a decade. A professional company, it performs a high percentage of Shakespeare in a variety of interesting locations such as churches, circus tents, colleges , parks, tourist centres, walled gardens, etc and is often played outdoors. Unfortunately the productions can be hit and miss . As a rule of thumb, the more it alters the plot and the text the less satisfactory it becomes. If you like The Merchant of Venice set in a drug-dealing Oxford sink estate with Punk Rock music, you'll be happy. However, this is company policy and the clue is in the name. Refreshments are normally available on site.
Ticket prices have been steadily rising and a premium ticket (front seat, programme, glass of wine, cushion) is nearly £30. A modest seat without the trimmings is about £10.
Theatrical competition comes from a number of similar (some AmDram) companies that also strut Shakespeare's stuff in the beautiful college garden of a midsummer's evening dream.
Creation has attempted to combat the poor weather of late by moving to dual indoor/outdoor venues. These early attempts suffer from poor organization and unfocussed management. The company needs to put this right quickly or it will remain in the precarious financial trouble it currently is in due to low audiences because of - as it has it - "the rain". Some less than invigorating performances also play (sic) a part.
Overall, give Creation a visit and try a couple of rivals then you can make your own judgement as to satisfaction and achievement.
Nine 'pon ten for trying but only six 'pon ten for execution. Could and should do better.

“A breath of fresh air...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2009

I found out about Creation Theatre Company whilst they were advertising for 'Othello' in Bonn Square, being too busy with Uni work, disserations and alike I couldn't go. So this time it was a must! On arrival to'Twelfth Night' at the Said Business School I was greeted with a warm welcome by friendly organised staff. I went to see the show with a friend so we turned up an hour before the show for a bit of wine and BBQ food - great value!. Being an Architecture geek I was delighted with the setting, roof top Amphitheatre with a view across the school. As the light changes to a deeper blue the ambience changes, a transformation. The performance was top notch - Actors did a spectacular job! The show was actually accentuated when we were drizzled on a little (a 'mac-in-a-bag' is a must) - A tale of shipwrecks, sea, sand and love. We had an excellent night and will look forward to going in the Winter Season!! xx

“Unique theatre in Oxford”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2009

Oxford's Creation Theatre Company put on plays in weird and wonderful locations - an antique mirror tent, a church, on an island in a river... they mostly do Shakespeare, and they do it in really striking and creative ways. Both of the plays I've seen with them have been excellent and I'd recommend it to anyone who is in Oxford and keen to do something unique to the city.
