“Business Stays”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2013

I stay here when I cannot get other rooms... Why?

The mobile phone recption is awful, there is no other word for it. Even the staff admit that only 1 provider works in the hotel. The rooms are nice, but the bathroom is pokey.

There is no evening meal and the takewaway food is not great so I always take my own sandwich in when I stay.

The breakfast is good. I'm not a great one for big fried breakfasts and the choice for someone who stays away a lot is in my view very good.

No surprises with the Rooms, clean, functional and comfortable.

The downside was the choice of Hot food for the 'Included' Breakfast.

The three choices (Beans, scrambled eggs and sausages) fell well short of lothsome!

Surely it takes just as much effort to source rubbish food as it would proper, Substantial food and if it revolves around cost, then charge an extra quid if needs be.

In fact, I would have been happy to eat the Tesco burgers that are making the news right now, at least they contained meat which is more than can be said for the offerings at the HIE.

Normally Holiday Inn Express hotels are perfect for my purposes on business travel - this one falls slightly short of the norm - everything is OK as you'd expect but breakfast was in short supply and breakfast area could be better designed to cope with large number of users at peak times and I had a total of five key cards in one 12 hour stay as many of them wouldn't take the coding for the room... all in all a bit underwhelming!

Room Tip: Most room should be quiet enough - the surrounding roads are not major ones.

Close to the stadium, room small, but then again you don't need a dance hall. Clean quite rooms, breakfast is good. For the price it is a good value. Staff is friendly and welcoming. Restaurants close by.

We stayed at this hotel as part of a three days visit of Oxford and London celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary. The check in was quick, room clean and larger than the average, standard Express breakfast. The staff was polite, friendly and helpful and gave us valuable information regarding local attractions and restaurants. Overall, a good experience and would stay again.

This brand would not have been my first choice, particularly as I could have got a 'proper' Holiday Inn for £10 more, but stayed here due to location. Holiday Inn Express seems to pitch itself midway between the Novotels, Holiday inns, Jury Inn at one end and the Travelodges /Premier Lodge at the other. Part of the problem being that the better quality hotels can often be found at discount prices and then this brand seems very expensive for what it is. Lovely room, big room with double bed and also a sofa bed - bed a bit hard but choice of pillows - good bathroom but would have preferred a bath to a shower (not an option with this hotel) Very clean and well presented hotel.
Breakfast horrible! Many people have commented on the horrible scrambled egg - wouldn't the obvious thing be to address the problem and provide better quality food! Rest of breakfast poor, rubber sausages, cheap beans and sliced break to toast - cake and croissants dry and tasteless cake. ............ But there was a breakfast! Many hotels don't include breakfast in rate, so is better to have a horrible breakfast than no breakfast?
Overall distinctly average - but I don't think it pretends to be anything other that, so does its job well.
