We got married at The Westwood Hotel and Saturday and I couldn't wait to write this review!
We chose the hotel last year after looking at several hotels in the area, none of which could match the level of service or costings that were given to us. What we liked most of all was that their immediate reaction to anything is "yes"! I asked if we could decorate the garden, have a bouncy castle, put up bunting all around the front of the hotel and numerous other crazy ideas and not once did Alana shake her head and tell me I was pushing my luck! Our wedding package included floristry and a DJ, both of which were local and provided by the hotel. Merilyn ensured that we made contact well in advance and the service from both of these suppliers was excellent and both come highly recommended. She was also able to find a nanny to look after several small children on the day! Very impressive!
We had a long wait till the beginning of this year before we could start the serious of putting a wedding for 100 people together, during which time the hotel underwent a serious renovation of several rooms and a change of wedding planner from Alana to Merilyn. Also during this time we had several visits to the hotel, taking our parents and some friends for drinks and afternoon tea and each time we were met by friendly, knowledgeable staff who always did their best for us, showing us the work that was being done to the rooms, talking through menu changes and introducing us to the new staff onsite.
When the serious organising started Merilyn was always on hand, she loves a spreadsheet and we were able to supply her with a list of guests who were staying and what room we had allocated them, we also extended our wedding to include a pre-wedding party on the Friday night too for 26 people, another spreadsheet sent! One of our party didn't have a good meal that night and this issue was dealt with the customary grace expected of the staff here and the cost was deducted from her bill without asking. The rest of the food was great and the portions were HUGE!!!
The pre-wedding party and the day itself went like clockwork, Merilyn and the rest of the staff looked after our guests with grace and care, nothing was too much. Our guests were able to check in earlier to prepare for the wedding at 3pm, making it more relaxing for them and when a cot was found to be unsuitable they found another one within minutes! The canapes were fabulous and the wedding breakfast food was great, the staff looked immaculate, the gardens were gorgeous and looked great with our decorations all around it. Many of the staff asked if they could help us to set up the decorations and did so when it was required of them. So many of our guests commented on the helpfulness of the staff and how much they enjoyed the whole day, it was amazing.
Merilyn always seems to be around, iPad in hand, quietly controlling the whole affair, asking for a quick word when she wanted clarification on anything or advising me of any changes to plans, directing staff and making plans, her quiet, calm efficiency was greatly appreciated minutes before the ceremony when I burst into emotional tears!
I was in awe of the staff who were able to turn the ceremony room into a dining room then into a disco venue with the minimum of fuss and maximum speed, they were still working hard at 1am when I went to bed. The next morning we came down to a beautifully prepared breakfast room, with the flower arrangements from the wedding on the table and a fantastic buffet breakfast, their sausages truly are fabulous! All but two of our guests breakfasted during the allocated breakfast time and when the last two turned up late, they were looked after with the same grace and good humour as everyone else was. The staff had gathered all of our belongings into one room, making it easier to find our miss-placed "stuff". Sunday morning was a hive of activity as we dismantled the garden decorations and the staff were happy to help here too. Checking out is easy as the receptionist is a complete professional, who knew were everything was and always had a pair of scissors and spare room keys to hand - seriously, how many times could i displace my key? The housekeeping staff go about their day with calm efficiency, they even serviced our bridal suite during the service and provided clean sheets in my daughters room when a drink was spilt on her bed at 1am! I must apologise to them now for the state our room was left in - there was confetti, streamers and balloons all over the place courtesy of our best man and cohorts!!! The bar staff were great fun on the night, even the slow one raised a laugh, no-one was kept waiting for long and we certainly didn't get any complaints from guests desperate for a drink, something we've encountered at other weddings.
As a recent bride I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough to any potential bride to be, so please don't be put off by any of the negative comments on this website by previous people. This is not a 5 star hotel, it's a bloody great 3 star hotel that does what it does really well, under the vision of a lovely owner who is passionate about the place and a great management team who lead and equally great team of people.
Yes there are some issues, mobile phone signal is atrocious, but that's not the hotels fault, it's shockingly bad in the whole area of Boars Hill, but the WiFi signal is fine. Some of the rooms were really hot, it's not difficult to open a window! And yes the water pressure isn't brilliant in the older part of the hotel and yes service can be a little slow at times but these are little things that no way detract from the overall marvelousness of this gem of a hotel!!! So please go and see Merilyn and discuss your wedding with them, you will not be disappointed!!!
