“Distinctly underwhelming.....a damp squid.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2014

Lovely location and on first impressions driving up to the hotel we anticipated a good stay.
Check in was good but on arrival to our room we suddenly had a sense of great disapointment. Instead of a lovely spacious country house style room we were faced with what is basically a dormitory room. Basic, box like and boring. The walls being made of paper and having the fortune to hear every word , door bang and ablutions of fellow occupants.
The restaurant unfortunately was similar..no real restaurant experience, bland and confined dining area with alot if guests choosing to eat in the alternative bar area... but the food was nice, service good and value also fair.
Bar service friendly and helpful...surrounfings functional.
If its a business centre/training facility you need then this "ticks" the boxes. If its a country hotel you're after for leisure stay....then you may be some what let down.
9am check out was also a little too early for our leisure traveller needs.
Price was good which ptobably reflects the value for money received.

I really like this place - it is not quite a hotel but a training centre who offer their spare capacity to guests. It is certainly hotel standard, perhaps the menu is a little limited, but the food is decent quality and the breakfasts are really something special (probably the best scrambled egg in the world!) Tea and Coffee is always available, and the bar prices are really good value, so once you are there, you are not being ripped off. The rooms are great - business-like but very comfortable, clean and well equipped. Check out is quite early, so not really a "leisure" stop and I am not sure I would visit this place with kids, but as a business stopover, it has everything you need and is great value for money.

Room Tip: All the same

I stayed here one night with my son as he was spending a day at Oxford university but hotels in Oxford were all more expensive. The room was basic but we had everything we needed and although my bed was a zbed it was extremely comfortable and I slept well. The room had a TV and there was free wi-fi. We had tea and coffee and even biscuits and the room was spotlessly clean, nothing to fault. Included in the price was full English buffet style breakfast and I think that £50 for 2 people represents excellent value for money. We chose the budget room but there are superior rooms available if you want to pay a bit more. The hotel is in a beautiful location in the country next to a lake and the views are free. I would recommend this hotel and would stay here again if I was in the area

Do remember this is really a conference centre with nice rooms and good food.
Good customer service from friendly staff. Rooms are separate from the main building.
Set in nice grounds in the countryside.

We stayed here in mid-August for a friend's wedding which was nearby.

The main house and grounds look fantastic, the welcome was good with a nice quick check-in.

We were in a room out in the Cherwell wing. It's modern, perhaps 90s, was clean but felt a lot more like a chain budget hotel in a town centre or service station rather than a £100 a night room in a country hotel. With the budget furniture, small room and hospital style lino on the bathroom floor it felt very institutional, just like university accommodation.

In our ground floor room the windows had been left open to air the room and it was full of insects.

For us it was fine, we just needed somewhere to lay our heads after a wedding but I'd have been massively disappointed had this been our destination for a weekend away.

I'd recommend that the hotel owners could be a little more transparent about the different rooms so that customers know what they're purchasing before they book. There don't seem to be any photos of the Cherwell/Pembrook rooms apart from a little photo (with the chequered curtains) on the "accommodation" page of their website.

Room Tip: Try to avoid the student style rooms in the Cherwell or Pembrook "wings"

Booked an overnight stay as we were travelling on to Southampton the next day. Had a lovely afternoon strolling round the grounds, and enjoying the beautiful countryside. Enjoyed a lovely cup of coffee seated outside. Later that evening we enjoyed a first class meal. Starter scallops on black pudding rings with pea purée. Followed by pork steak with new potatoes and fresh veg with a choice of Diane sauce, can only be described as delicious. Dessert was a lemon torte with creme freshe. We spent the remainder of the evening in the lounge, where we met a nice couple from Fleetwood.
We awoke a 6.00am and we're able to get a continental breakfast, we paid for our meal from the previous night plus bar bill and vacated at 7.15am

Would definitely return when in the area, if rooms available

I stayed here for 2 nights for a residential course with work - on the drive up looks very impressive - in your room it looks like student accomodation - not impressed! Have stayed in much nicer business centres! We arrived late on the first night and well done to the staff who did put some extra food on for us especially - wouldn't stay here for anything other than a residential course though
