“OK but looking a little weary.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2010

Oxford isn't particularly well served by hotels but this seemed to be one of the better ones. It is a little out of town, ok if you like a good walk or can take the car into town.

The staff are generally quite helpful.

The outside of the hotel looks good, however the interior is looking a bit weary. A refurb is overdue.

The rooms aren't very well soundproofed. You can hear everyone walking up and down the corridor.

Generally a three star hotel, rather than four star, with potential.

I would recommend this hotel, mainly because there aren't many alternatives.

A good all-round hotel with excellent location and friendly staff.

We didn't use the restaurants but walked the 15 mins into town or got the bus. It's really easy to get to and fro from Oxford, it's far enough away to be quiet but close enough to pop in and out of town easily

The room was a good size (we had the upgrade room) and was generally quite quiet. from the moment we walked in we were made to feel welcome. My partner used the spa for a 30-minute facial and came out pleased as punch, the rates were good for the spa.

The only downside of this hotel (as alluded to by other visitors) is that it does feel a bit 'tired'. If you overlook the occasional peeling wallpaper it does still feel like a classy hotel.

We'd stay there again if visiting Oxford in the future.

Stayed at the Oxford Spires for Valentine's weekend. The hotel was 'nice', room very comfortable, quiet, clean. Ate in the restaurant in the evening and, having booked the meal, were very disappointed with the service - in fact they volunteered a 10% discount because they had been so slow.

Our room was a very long way from the Reception - it is a real maze of rooms and starting to get a bit dated, but still pretty good.

The hotel is very well located and it is only a short walk into Oxford City Centre. You can walk along the river and in the summer it must be lovely. Easy to find, plenty of parking - which has got to be a plus as parking is very expensive in Oxford.

Our main problem with this hotel was with the late check-in. Our party arrived around mid-day only to be told that our rooms wouldn't be ready until 3pm. This seems very late considering we were only there for 1 night. In general, the decor is more like a 3 star hotel - and the bar is very expensive. There is parking on-site but when we were there we struggled to find a space. The bar area itself has all the atmosphere of an airport lounge.

This hotel is perhaps a three star with surly service.

It makes great claim of looking charming in its Cotswold stone - I've seen better looking bunkers. Also for a modern hotel it is rambling to say the least, with a long walk to reception for most rooms. Speaking of long walks - on their website they state that they are half a mile from Oxford centre - more like a mile at least to get as far as Christ Church so twenty minutes at least.

I had to attempt check in three times - to always be told to come back as my room wasn't ready ("Another 5 mins, sir") until I insisted on another room. The room I got was not what I paid for - as it was lacking all the "complementaries" (they have now turned up - minus a fridge so are sitting outside on the window sill!), also for a double room they had two single duvets on the bed, which all had to get changed. The room may have been refurbed - though if it has the carpet fitter should be shot for the saggy bulges they have left.

They now seem to offer free wi-fi (I'm using it now!) - and it seems that I can VPN on it - despite the instructions telling me that I have to pay extra for that facility.

I stay in one or two 4 star hotels every week and this place is way off the mark of being 4 star - from the welcome at the front desk (despite dealing with the same girl on reception all three times I attempted to check in, I was greeted as if I had just walked in off the street on every occasion) through to the cramped corridors and the finish of the rooms.

Next time in Oxford - I'm going to stay at the Malmasion - might cost more - but a whole world less hassle with infinite polish, flair and attention to service that give it the grading it desrves.

We don't do 4 star often, so maybe I'm easily pleased. Very comfortable (despite the cold weather), with efficient and friendly staff. Great pool and gym facilities (don't normally do those either, but after xmas....well, you know :)

Excellent breakfast, with the vegetarians in our family well catered for. Would definitely stay again. Good sized family room.

Nice walk into town along the river (about 10 mins stroll).
