We were in the area and we dropped in for a quick bite on a casual recommendation.
First impressions were good and they were backed up by friendly service. I like a light ale and asked the barman who was about 25 years my junior for a recommendation - there was no hesitation and he obviously knew all the beers that were on offer. His recommendation was spot-on as the beer was a golden delight, really fresh and well kept.
But the beer was soon out-classed by the fish & chips that we ordered, again on his recommendation.
Easily the best fish and chips we have had for a few years. Chips were skin on and had been fried in very fresh fat. The fish was succulent and flaky, but the star act was the beer batter that was flecked with fennel seeds. Just gorgeous.
It's a bit gastro pub, but the smeared pea purée was just right as was the tartare sauce.
The bill for 2 x Fish & Chips, a pint and a white wine spritzer was a very reasonable £25.50.
Will definitely be going back soon - this place is a real find.
