5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2013

Easily reached with good access to Oxford. Ample car parking. Immaculate, quiet room without overdoing the presentation. Opening windows and blackout quality curtains!!! Neat en-suite with room for all our gear. Terrific, unrivalled choice of fruit, drinks, cereals and cooked food at breakfast, with continuous clearing of used crockery. Much improved reception area since our previous visit. Cheery, enthusiastic reception staff. Best hotel experience for years.

Room Tip: It's a big hotel with long corridors, so you might want to be close to main reception.

This hotel is located on the outskirts of Oxford, with free parking. The bus into town is only a couple of minutes walk from the hotel, and there is a service about every 20 minutes. The hotel is also a great place to stay prior to catching flights from Heathrow (which is the main reason why we stayed there).
The room and bed were very comfortable and the breakfast was good.

Dear Guest

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel.

We are ideally situated close to Oxford and as you mentioned there is a super bus route into the city center and many of our guests take advantage of this.

We look forward to you coming back and thank you for choosing us.

We booked a one night stay through Secret Escapes at a bargain price which included room, 3 course dinner, bottle of house wine and full breakfast. We also booked in 2 treatments in the leisure centre (I wouldn't call it a spa). I was almost expecting it to be really mediocre due to the price and we often stay in 5 star character hotels so have been a bit spoilt. This one is more modern and more of a business person's hotel. However I cannot fault our visit. The room although not that large was very clean and comfortable. The bathroom was very clean and well maintained. There is coffee and tea making facilities in the room, a TV and hairdryer but no minibar. We take our own champagne etc in a coolbag! Our treatments were also very good. However if you are looking for a relaxing spa-type experience, there is not what I would call a proper spa - there is a gym, very small pool and a couple of treatment rooms. No relaxation area etc. I was very impressed by the menu at dinner. Mainly because I am vegetarian and there was lots of choice. The food was good for the money, in the style of 5 star fine dining but not quite there although the coffee & pecan parfait was one of the best desserts I have ever had. The service was very attentive and very quick - almost too quick. Breakfast was good - the hot selection was fresh and very nice, and there was the usual selection of cereals, pastries etc. Good variety of teas but I wasn't keen on the coffee machines. I would have preferred to have been brought a cafetiere of coffee. Overall this is one of the cheapest nights away we have had and it was unbelievable value for money.

A quick break for two to see the sights of Oxford and Blenheim Palace we booked The Oxford Hotel. We arrived late morning and even though there was a great bustle of activity of a wedding party leaving the receptionist was friendly, smiling and helpful. From that moment we were greeted by ALL staff with a smile and a friendly welcome.
Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. The restaurant staff at dinner and breakfast were efficient, friendly and eager to help in any way. The meals were promptly served and of a high standard and most enjoyable.
We came back from Oxford after a whole day 30 minutes late for afternoon tea. No problem, within minutes two pots of fresh tea were produced, just the ticket after a day walking the streets and corridors of museums etc.
Thoroughly recommend The Oxford for good value and a really great staff who made our break.

Room Tip: A first floor room would have allowed us to have the window open rather than rely on the 'quiet...

Stayed here for 2 nights on a Secret Escapes deal this was good value. The inclusive 3 course meal was chosen from the main menu and was very good, this included a bottle of wine either red or white, very palatable! The standard double room was small but adequate; net curtain was hanging off the rail at one end, tea and coffee making facilities included a fruit tea choice too which was welcome. You can ask at reception for extra milk, etc and they are obliging, we also took one of these teabags down to breakfast as we didn't like the own brand tea available in the morning. The bathroom was small but clean enough and the shower was lovely after a days exploring. There was occasionally a strange vibrating noise which I took to be the boiler or water pipes??? This didn't last long and only happened once a night with the bathroom door closed this wasn't a problem but then I do always sleep in earplugs!
Breakfast was ok, the usual choice of buffet, self service for food and drinks just a bit slow in clearing the tables. We also used the pool which is small and the water was a bit cloudy but it was relaxing, shame you have to pay £1 for the lockers after already paying to stay in the hotel but hey ho.
We got change from reception for the bus and used the 24 hour ticket at £4 each as we were going back into Oxford on the second night for a meal. I was dissapointed to find that there is a lovely river wallk down the road over the bridge which we didn't find out about until the end of our break apparently there are a couple of pubs there too. This might have been good for the first night after our meal at the hotel as we had to eat early as all other bookings had been taken.
Overall a good base for our mini break and I think we got what we paid for and we would recommend.

Room Tip: Room 235 was quiet although up stairs and a trek from reception if you have mobility issues.

Dear Guest

Thank you for your review on Trip Advisor and for choosing to stay with us.

It was great to read that you enjoyed your stay and I greatly appreciate your balanced review. We do charge £1.00 for the locker (although you get this back when you replace the key) and this is simply to stop guests accidently walking away with the keys or to help restrict members retaining lockers for thier own personal use so everyone has access to the maximum amount of lockers at anyone time.I have used numerous systems over the years and this one seems to be one of the better types.

Your feedback is greatly appreciated and I hope to be able to welcome you back at some point soon.

Kind regards

Extremely disappointing, poor value for money, poor quality food and rooms not up to scratch. There is no way this is a 4 star hotel. Save your money give it a miss you would be better off in a Travelodge.

Dear Guest

Thank you for your review and for taking the time to comment.

I am sorry that you did not enjoy your stay with us and I sincerely regret that was the case. One of our strongest positive comments we typically get on Trip Advisor is our food and service from the team and I would like to assure you your expererience is not representative of the hotel or its team.

I hope that you revisit us and we get the opportunity to restore your faith in the hotel.

Thank you again for your comments and please feel free to contact me at any time should you wish to discuss this.

My husband and I booked one night here after staying here at a similar time last year. However, on this occasion we booked through an on- line booking site at a discount and can't help wondering if this had a bearing on this year's experience.
Firstly, the pro's:
The staff are extremely friendly, approachable and eager to please and are a credit to Puma Hotels.
The location is ideal for access to Oxford, plenty of parking and a bus stop close to hotel make it easy to travel into the city on the very frequent bus service
The entrance and reception area is modern and bright.
The "cons":
Our room decor was very dark and a little dated which is ok for a one night stay. However, some issues of housekeeping are what really lets it down.
The curtain was hanging off the rail - a small matter but noticeable and doesn't give a very good impression.
There was a similar problem with the shower curtain in the bathroom
The tile grouting around the shower area was stained and the bath waste looked dirty and had definitely seen better days
The toilet bowl below the water line was stained with a build up of limescale and really needs to be replaced as a matter of urgency as it is certainly not what one expects in a 4 star establishment .
Another small matter, complimentary toiletries such as a shower cap were missing this year although basics such as shampoo and shower gel were there. Cost- cutting perhaps ?
In short, rooms look a little tired and need a refurbishment. Come on Puma Hotels, your staff and guests deserve better!

Dear Guest

Thank you for your review and for taking the time to comment on our hotel.

I greatly appreciated your balanced review and although I was pleased to read of all the good points it was of course disappointing to note areas we could have been better at.

I will certainly be speaking with the Head Housekeeper regarding the room issues however as Trip advisor is anonymous I would greatly appreciate an E-Mail or call to advise which room it was that you stayed and I will inspect this personally.

In the meantime thank you again for your comments and I hope to be able to weclome you back to the hotel at some point soon.

Kind regards

Paul
