“Sanctuary from Oxford’s driving restrictions”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2013

We may have been lucky. We were given two rooms on the second floor. One was good (spacious and overlooking a college) and the other was acceptable (a little cramped and overlooking some large ventilation equipment and a small car park).

Both were well equipped, clean and in good condition for rooms in a building of this age. It would be possible to pick fault but at the rate we got and with the excellent service at reception and in the lounge, it would be unfair. This hotel proved to be a very good choice particularly given the ideal location for exploring Oxford.

The hotel car park is reached by turning into a side road just before the menacing car restrictions prominent in this area of Oxford. Miss the turning and if you are too early in the day, you’ll be driving on roads that don’t welcome you and probably hemmed in by buses, bicycles and police cars. Once parked (at £15 per 24 hours), you are well located. You leave your car keys at reception and at busy times I envisage they have all sorts of fun maximising the use of the available space. During our trip, the car park was reasonably uncluttered.

Complimentary WiFi was unexpected and welcome. Bar service was good and prices reasonable but if the hotel catering doesn't tempt you, it is rare to have so many good alternatives within easy walking distance. This will be the hotel we check first for availability and price for future visits.

The overall stay at the Mercure Oxford was satisfactory. The location was excellent within walking distance to the colleges, restaurants and shopping districts. It was a little hard to find and could benefit from a sign on the corner to "turn here". We had to circle the area twice before taking a chance down one street and finding it.

The hotel staff was extremely helpful with recommendations for local site seeing and dining upon check in. The hotel was located in a quiet corner of town which allowed for a very quiet restful sleep. My only concern was the bathroom facilities which were a little questionable in terms of working condition. I was afraid we might have to call for maintenance at some point. But otherwise, the overall hotel was nice.

We stayed at the Mercure Eastgate for 2 nights and had a very enjoyable stay, we had a double executive room which was adequate and very clean, the bed was also comfortable. We were on the 3rd floor which means negotiating a flight of stairs as the lift only goes to the 2nd floor but we were informed of this before we arrived, we parked on site at £15 per day which I didn't think was too bad for oxford. One thing to be aware of is that the entrance to the car park is very narrow so beware if you are unsure in tight spaces. We ate in the restaurant on the first evening the food was well cooked and with 3 courses costing £25 per head. Breakfast was also very nice a good selection and freshly cooked for you in addition to the cold buffet. I would like to compliment the staff on their attentiveness throughout our stay the were all friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Overall an enjoyable
Stay and would return in the future if we visit Oxford again.

All the money has gone on the bar and restaurant- rooms was grubby and cramped. Some staff were excellent others completely clueless. Food ok but nothing special. Bar overpriced and glass filthy. Big shame. Spoiled my weekend treat .

Dear Ziameadows
Thank you for your feedback following your stay with us.
At the outset ,please accept my apologies for the issues you detail. I am sorry that you feel that some aspects of your stay spoiled your weekend treat.
We offer a wide selection of rooms at the hotel , being an old building the style and size vary greatly. An on going refurbishment programme is in place to ensure all our facilities are continually improved.
In relation to the bar, I can only apologise for the condition of the glass , however I believe our prices are fair within the local market.
I do hope that you will revisit the hotel at somesatge in the future and I will ensure that you have a more enjoyable time.

Kind Regards

As many reviewers mention the High Street position is very convenient. Our room had good views of the historic examination rooms opposite. The private secure car park is a bonus- once one has negotiated the narrow entrance. Staff will retrieve cars if asked.
The hotel has history and a sense of it but is also slightly tired in decoration and furnishing. Our room/suite size was more than adequate.
The staff were friendly yet obviously professional. We booked B.B. and evening meal and at a most reasonable rate. Unfortunately the food was of mixed quality some good and some not well prepared. The staff were caring and responsive but very fatty lamb and warm salty ice cream could have ruined an evening. The restaurant manager was perfect in his response of apology and free drinks but the food should not have left the kitchen. Breakfast was much better and perfectly presented with an excellent choice.
We would stay again for the position and staff and in the belief that the kitchen situation was to be resolved.

We chose this hotel for its fantastic location right in the centre of Oxford near to absolutely everything. The room was clean, well-appointed and large (we went for one of the executive rooms) we also ate in the restaurant - food great and service good. The only slight gripe - they closed the bar really early and were looking to get packed away even though there were still people in the bar. Only 11ish - hardly late for a hotel bar. I also think the hotel was just a little over-priced - but then again one has to pay for such a great location.

Room Tip: Go for a room with a view and a larger space
