“A Pleasant Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2008

We stayed at the Mercure Eastgate for 3 nights from 12th March and were pleasantly surprised.

We parked up and approached the front door, dreading what we would find behind it based on previous reviews. What we found was a modern, spacious reception area, obviously recently refurbished as you could smell fresh paint on the walls and polish on the wooden floor.

The reception staff were very friendly and could not do enough for us during our stay, whether it be ensuring that our car was parked in a space suitable for an early start the next day or providing us with extra tea bags for the room.

The bar area was brand new, modern, stylish, but in keeping with it's traditional surroundings. An excellent place to relax in the evenings.

Our room (311) was very clean and spacious with a view overlooking the Examination Halls of Oxford University.

The hotel itself is ideally located off the High Street with plenty of good restaurants, pubs and bars within 5 to 10 minutes walk.

We would definitely return to this hotel should we visit Oxford again providing the standards of service and cleanliness that we experienced are maintained.

Good location and clean room but foyer was building site and resented paying full price when facilities such as the bar were closed. Reception staff were surly, smarmy and inept. It took an age to get our car keys back and at least one other guest was surprised to be charged £12.50 for the privilege of parking, which we weren't warned about when checking in.

This hotel has an excellent central location, which literally you can walk out of the hotel and you are in the centre of Oxford. It is opposite University College, which provides one of the best views in Oxford (if your room is on that side- I suggest you request, we did). The hotel is part of a chain so it is not going to stamp itself on you as unique, but the rooms are very comfortable and pleasantly decorated. It previously used to be part of a stage coach house, so is in keeping with the feel of what you would expect from Oxford.

We chose this on price v location v rating on tripadvisor and had a great stay. Perhaps one of the boutique hotels may be better, but they are hard to get late bookings; and one of the more expensive hotels would also be better but you won't find deals and you pay for what you get.

Overall a hotel that you can use for a romantic weekend, business trip or sightseeing visit. Did the job for us.

Very disappointed – the reception and bar were being redecorated and were unusable – the room was tiny and a high-pitched noise from the aircon is the next room disturbed our sleep.

The breakfast was luke-warm (very unpleasant).

The only good thing about the hotel is the central location.

Far too expensive – and they charge £12.50 per day extra for parking

Great location but .......... that's it really! Dreadful service, impersonal "travel lodge type" hotel. Splash out a little and stay somewhere better!

Stayed at the Eastgate on a Saturday night at the beginning of February and had a very pleasent stay. The lobby is currently being remodelled so was a bit of a building site but didn't really affect things. My room was modest-medium in size, but perfectly adequate when you consider its location and that its a townhouse hotel. Was very nicely decorated and kitted out, with a very comfy bed, plenty of pillows and a great bathroom - again quite small but with a great bath/shower and lots of warm fluffy white towels.

Yes the walls are a little thin (the exploits of room 401 were particularly vocal, but i'm pretty sure she was faking ;) ), but it didn't really trouble my stay. Staff very polite and competent, and there's a surprising amount of parking for slap bang in the middle of town.

Would certainly stay there again.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2008

My partner and I stayed here for the night of the 2 Feb, with the great location the main reason for us choosing it. However, we were not made aware whilst booking that the reception and lounge area of the hotel is currently undergoing a complete refurbishment, and paying £120 to wander through a demolition site to our room didn’t feel like the greatest value for money. The receptionist took great pains to point out that that was a room-only rate, and that it would cost us another £13.95 each to have breakfast (we elected instead to go The Grand a little way down the road – something I’d highly recommend).

We stayed in room 401, a ground floor room, with the hotel car park right outside the window. The room itself was a great size – very roomy and spacious – and seemed to have been redecorated quite recently. The bathroom was also large, with great water pressure in the bathroom. Being away from the road we had no problem with traffic noise, and the walk from the hotel past Christ Church Meadow to the university boathouses is quite lovely. However, overall the experience fell a little flat, and I think I’ll try somewhere else the next time I go to Oxford.
