“Nothing special”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2013

We live in Oxford but had been given an Afternoon Tea voucher. I personally have never been to the Randolph before but other family and some friends have with mixed reactions. I dressed up a little for the occasion, but wish I had just stayed in my jeans and t-shirt really.

We entered and the doorman said 'Good afternoon' and helpfully pointed us in the direction of the lounge. We hovered in the doorway of the lounge for about three minutes like lemons watching everybody enjoying themselves, listening to the piano.

The manager of the area attended to us and was pleasant enough but when he scanned his page several times unable to find our name, we knew our luck was out. He disappeared, reappeared, disappeared, reappeared, and I was getting quite dizzy after 10 minutes and fed up staring at the numerous holes in the wall where old photos had obviously been taken down. My eye also wandered regularly to the 'plinth' where the diary was held which looked like it had been made by a student in school during their first woodwork lesson.

Anyway, we were told they were full and could not accommodate us. We explained that we had booked for the following week but cancelled and rearranged the day after booking when we had realised that we had double-booked (booking made months back). There was some excuse given as to speaking to the wrong member of staff. We explained that we spoke to the staff on the number given on the voucher.

The manager tried his best to accommodate us and finally managed to squeeze us into the restaurant at the other end of the building. We were told (at 4pm as we sat) that the restaurant staff were doing us a favour and would need to clear us out and move us back to the lounge at 5pm.

So, clock watching, we scoffed at top speed. It was not particularly relaxing. There was a multitude of sandwiches, tiny cakes, and scones, along with one cup of hot drink for each person. All of this was served to us on our postage stamp sized table squashed in the corner out the way. At no point in the hour did any member of staff ask us if everything was OK.

During our brief encounter with the establishment we were 'monitored' by the restaurant staff who kept peering round the corner (like in a Carry On film) to see where we were up to before scuttling off.

A few staff milled around setting tables for dinner and we had to cope with tablecloths being ironed on the next table and it took one waitress the whole hour to set three tables. Quite astonishing. With her speed, if she had had a slight stoop I would have thought I had stepped into Acorn Antiques and met Mrs Overall.

As the table we were on was too small to house everything, the waiter put the tea pot on the radiator cover. The cake stand was wonky, crockery was chipped, the decor is dated in places, there were light bulbs out in the chandeliers, the windows were poor (member of the party is a carpenter and commented on broken sash cords hanging down) and the only other interaction that afternoon was from the restaurant manager who when we finally got up and left, smiled, thanked us, and provided a plastic tub (like the supermarket salad ones) to use as a goody bag for the last two thumbnail cakes left. All other staff encountered were surly and did not seem too bothered about actually being there.

This was not a 5* experience and we doubt very much that we will be back, which is a shame, as it could be so much better.

Positives: Lounge manager and Restaurant manager general manner and assistance was good.

Negatives: dated, lack of interest from staff, quality crockery and stands needs addressing

Would love to recommend it but do not feel I can in its current state based on today's experience.

Went for a lovely weekend break back in the city of Oxford and decided to stay at the best hotel around. Excellent reception staff and the Concierge was more than helpful. Staff very friendly and the cocktails went down very well. Breakfast is lovely and the rooms were nicely decorated and clean. Excellent all round and central to Oxford. Would highly recommend.

Room Tip: We had a suite which was very good and spacious

Really enjoyed our stay here. A great central location, with a really good room and the service was exactly what you would expect from a 5 star hotel. The atmosphere, staff service and attitude were all excellent.

The only reason I don't give 5 stars is due to difficulties with the room safe. Despite the best efforts of staff, who always arrived promptly it never operated correctly. Also, the location of the safe wasn't ideal for anyone with impairments or the elderly.

The breakfast, both food and service I recommend highly and a drink in the Morse Bar is a must. We had cocktails on my birthday and it was a great addition to our visit.

We already plan to return.

This was our third visit to the hotel and it was every bit as good as the previous two. As soon you enter the hotel you get a lovely cossetted feel and know from the smiling helpful faces you are in for a good time. We were escorted to our room and made to feel very special by a charming receptionist. The room was super, light and airy, extremely comfortable bed and the addition of a nespresso coffee machine since we last visited was very much appreciated. The evening turndown service is a smashing touch especially as it includes changing any dirty towels in the bathroom; it makes the room super cosy when you come back after an evening out to find the bed turned down with a welcoming chocolate on the pillow.
We enjoyed cocktails in the lounge overlooking the Ashmolean museum before enjoying a super meal in the restaurant, food and service impeccable. Breakfast was equally as good.
As long as the Randolph keeps up these standards, we shall always choose this hotel for our stays in Oxford.

Back to Randolph, feel at home, especially, the concierge has my name on the valet list already. Smooth checked in, but surprised with much room smaller and less facilities than our previous visit.

The worse was the squeaking noise from people walking at floor above. We asked to switch room, with special request of Ashmolean view, however, they gave 4 th floor which was not connected with main stairs. We refused to move.

The lady who served us, offered an upgrade, but with additional £40. What a sad 2nd visit! Finally, she tried to find her manager, but decided boldly, by her peers assistance, to move us to bigger room. And she promised to send our bag to the room. Finally, we got my room no 327 back, but without my luggage ready. Can't more complaint, since the rate was good via booking.com, only 161 pound, incl. breakfast and got my favorite room back.

Room Tip: Rooms at level 3 especially # 320, 323, 325 and 327 big room with Ashmolean view and no no squeaking...

We dont normally stay in 5* hotels but decided to treat ourselves on this occasion. I booked a special deal for the oxford hotel and booking on the web was fine. I also phoned to pre-book a parking space which was absolutely fine aswell.

We arrived at the hotel at 5:30pm and our car was taken away to be parked. The reception staff were very polite and the concierge was very helpful.

We went to our room and it was clear that parts of the hotel need a good lick of paint. It felt a bit old school like.
The room was very nice with a large bath/shower. Molton Brown products, biscuits, tea and coffee facilities. The bed was very comfortable. We had turn down service which was very nice.

The hotel is amazingly located for Oxford - right in the heart of everything, college, restaurants, river, shopping etc.

Breakfast was beautiful, full englilsh followed by full continental, fruit, cereal, fruit juices, croissants etc

When checked out we were told that we would have to pick up our car by 1pm. I did question this as we paid more then we would have done parking for 24hours in a nearby city car park and insisted that we picked it up at 5. They did try to make us pay more but they didnt really argue and as it was we picked it up at 2.

The downside to staying in this hotel was probably our room location. We overlooked the access to the car park and we think all the air conditioning units were also there, hence throughout the whole night it sounded like we had a coach parked outside our bedroom window throughout our whole stay. On this basis we didnt sleep. My partner isnt a light sleeper either. This did put a big dampner on our entire stay.

Overall the staff are polite and very helpful, breakfast was very good, downstairs the hotel is very nice but upstairs it is clear that it needs some looking after. I would also advise to get a location away from the car park area to try to avoid the air conditioning units. There isnt much choice in Oxford but due to our room location I wouldnt book this particular 5* hotel in the future.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet location especially away from the parking areas

I stayed in this hotel in May with my family and partner - Greeted straight away by the concierge service which was a nice touch, then walked into the main enterance and was served very quickly and our bags were taken from us for save keeping until our room was available.

The rooms are spacious and clean, the hotel looks lovely and it is very well situated.

No concerns whatsoever. I highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms are lovely and well kept - cleaners regularly come around :)
