“Character in Oxford”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2013

What a lovely spot to stay. Great location to be able to go out for a walk around this beautiful historic city. Staff were pleasant and helpful. The rooms were comfortable and loaded with character. Ours had the typical sloping ceilings you find in old buildings so if you are tall you may have to stoop especially when getting in and out of the shower which is over the bathtub. There is a couple of lovely restaurants and a bar on site. Parking is available but you need directions to find it (just ask the reception staff for a map).

Room Tip: Ask the staff about ceiling height.

Overall we had a positive experience in this hotel. The location is tremendous, the parking-a real plus (although a little difficult to navigate; I'd recommend ringing the hotel ahead of your stay for directions), and the breakfast was freshly cooked to order and very nice. The brasserie has a nice atmosphere and the walls are adorned with an eclectic selection of art which are great conversation pieces. The staff were professional, friendly and attentive without being overbearing. The downside for us was definitely the price. Given the location we were prepared to pay more than we have done at other hotels in Oxford on previous visits. This suited our needs as we were only staying for one night en route from Cornwall to Newcastle so we wanted to be able to step out of the door into the city centre. However, while it more than delivered on that front, I have to admit to being slightly disappointed when we were shown to our room. It overlooked the car park (although you could see St Mary's spire) and was very small. Yes city centre locations often mean compromising on room size but for the rate paid it just seemed as though something was missing. That said, the bed was huge, almost the size of the room, and very comfortable. The hotel was quiet and so we slept reasonably well without the usual door slamming that's usually suffered during the night and early morning. The wardrobe was very small and if you were staying for more than a few nights I think you would struggle with space. All in all a great hotel which deserves good reviews but this is based on the charm of the location and service not the room or the rate paid. We negotiated breakfast into our rate which was £270.00. If we hadn't it would have been an extra £20-£30 on top which is just a little too high for what you get. We love Oxford but would probably stay out of the city and use taxis or buses in the future.

This is my fourth stay at this hotel over a period of five years. I remember my first visit when wifi was just being installed and the hotel still felt relatively new (it is evident the hotel has no record of my repeat visits). The hotel continues to add elements that enhance the customers' overall experience, for example their excellent service - but it has also elected to continually increase the price of staying at the establishment. Admittedly, while I still rank the hotel high in Oxford for its location, amenities and service, I feel that the added cost over the years is beginning to tip the value proposition towards the negative sector. No major complaints - I was treated respectfully, the room was more than adequate (TV channel selection could be better), quality of the food at the singular restaurant (Quod) was acceptable (but not great) and the staff was extremely eager to please. But this experience has to commensurate with the cost of staying at the hotel - this is Oxford and not London. At current rates, I am expecting something more from the establishment like access to a gym, pool or spa (service not in the room) and higher quality food at the restaurant. The quality of the room also needs to be of a higher grade - with more decorative details and exhibiting better art work (ecletic sketches were on display throughout) . Getting the staff to smile a lot, while pleasant, does not cut it - sorry, but good try.

The Old Bank Hotel is a very good high-end hotel in the heart of the old city. The service and attention to the customer was great. The rooms were medium to fairly large depending on where in the hotel they are located. The associated restaurant and bar were also quite nice and very convenient. Would definitely stay at the Old Bank again.

Room Tip: The rooms on the courtyard a bit quieter than in the front of the hotel.

Stayed at the old bank a number of times and this time we stayed for our wedding week. The staff were really helpful with all the deliveries and frantic bridesmaids running around - they ever left us a little wedding gift. Great restaurant downstairs for afternoon tea and breakfast - have the eggs benedict or the porridge. Waitresses particularly good downstairs in the restaurant.

I guess I say it all in the title. The location is excellent, the staff is very nice and really try their best to compensate from the total disappointment of the hotel. The room are very very small, post stamp size, surely do not meet the standard size of a 4 stars and regarding the price it is just ridiculous expensive. The reception room has no interest what so ever. I guess they spend all the money and focus on the brasserie and in the art collection.

Charming room, great art, free wifi and walking tours, delightful service, perfect location. Lots of details like heated towel racks, evening turn-down, 24-hr room service, free in-room coffee/tea/hotchocolate, and minibars. Loved our stay.
