“Rude staff, not family friendly at all even on a week day when empty!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2012

Myself, my baby and a friend went to have cream tea here in August 2012; my friend lives near Oxford and said it did the best cream teas around. The woman behind the counter looked at us disdainfully when we arrived with the pram.... in the middle of the afternoon on a weekday - making us feel unwelcome even though our baby was well behaved. They only had one other table in so could really have done with more customers! As they were empty, we put the pram next to our table. She immediately asked us to move it to by the door, which we duly did. When my little boy picked up the laminated menu and put it in his mouth, as all babies do, the woman behind the counter came over before I could remove it myself, snatched it out of his hands and said "we only have 7 of those" really rudely. We left shortly afterwards without sampling the cream tea. I am sure that most tea rooms rely on families for custom on week days and the attitude of the waitress was even more shocking considering they only had 2 other customers in the whole place! We will never go back.

“Terrible customer service”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2012

We stopped there as a family group of 4 people because 2 of us fancied a spot of afternoon cream tea. 2 of us were happy not to order anything and just enjoy the conversation. The staff however were not so happy, and refused to serve just 2 of us insisting that due to 'house rules' as there were 4 people we must make 4 orders!! The whole atmosphere of the place stank of a building whose sole purpose is to rip off tourists visiting Oxford. (I am English, I live in Oxford and I also think that everything at The Rose is very overpriced, e.g 4 x cream tea=£30!!). We walked out and went to 'Oxford Rendezvous' across the road which was far better and very nice at much less cost.

“Pleasant but no great find.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2012

We visited The Rose for lunch on a really hot day, it was reasonably busy and the staff were polite.
The food was nice and well presented. The toilets could have done with a refurb.
A pleasant lunch stop, I would go back but I wouldn't rush.

“Agree-'a little underwhelming'”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2012

We thought we would try a new cafe for breakfast and the rose looks really cute with a tasty and organic menu. I had the light breakfast-1 fried egg, a small piece of bacon and a chipolata sausage with a piece of toast and tea. It was ok but it did look a bit measly on the plate. Price wise, it didnt mind paying £6 for this but the traditional which consisted of an extra rash of bacon and sausage, a mushroom and half a tomato for £10.80 is a bit steep. The service was really slow and noisy, not really what you want on a sun morning. The tea selection is great and it was nice to find somewhere that serves something other than english breakfast or earl grey. There are better places in oxford for breakfast.
