“Just what we were hoping to find”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2011

En route to Bletchley Park. B&B first booked cancelled at last minute. Then we found this gem. Twin room at back of house, quiet and looking out at pretty garden. Spotlessly clean en suite and very comfy beds. Breakfast delightful, service and welcome excellent. Made all the better by being situated 5 mins walk from excellent Magdalen Arms pub. Would definitely go back.

Room Tip: Book in advance if you want to eat at Magdalen Arm

The single room was tiny, draughty (I had an icy gale from the window down my neck) and lacked basic equipment: no soap in the handbasin, no welcome information (including wifi password). The mattress and possibly the bed base were overused and need to be replaced. The shared bathroom was clean and functional. My colleague's room, also single, had the soap and the welcome literature, but was smaller still. No draughts though! Judging by the other guests in the dining room at breakfast their experience was better. So my advice is: consider if you don't want a single room. If you want just a single room - avoid.

Mary and George the owners were very good hosts and lovely people. Breakfast was the usual : English Breakfast, Toast, Tea/coffee, Cereals, Juices. Our room in the back of the house was a nice quiet comfortable room, the beds were lovely, nice and clean everyday. Our en-suite had a double shower, toilet and sink, which did the job.

The bus stop was right outside the B & B and it only took 10 minutes into the centre of Oxford. 20 minutes on foot.

All in all we had a lovely stay and would go back to stay again when in Oxford again.

We stayed at Browns for one night while attending an event nearby, and found it a comfortable, but overpriced place to stay...

LOCATION:
We chose Browns because of its proximity to the event venue, so it was a good location for us - however, I'm not sure how long it would take to access the centre of Oxford as we didn't venture into town during our stay. Although the road Browns is located on is not particularly busy, we did find it noisy at night - our room was at the front of the house, and we had the windows open as it was a warm night, and for some reason the noise of cars going past really seemed to carry up to our room!

ROOM:
Our bedroom was comfortable and clean and a good size. However, we found the en-suite bathroom very small and not particularly functional - specifically, the sink was ridiculously tiny! It was half set into the wall, and even just getting your hands under the taps was a squeeze, so any other standard bathroom-related tasks (eg. washing your face) were pretty much impossible as there was just no space to manoevre in! Also, the toilet was one of those weird macerator ones, so flushing it was pretty noisy...

BREAKFAST
We both sampled aspects of the cooked breakfast, and generally found it well-cooked. It would be nice to have self-service access to cereals etc though...

STAFF
Our limited contact with the owners of Browns was positive - they both seemed polite and friendly.

Overall, Browns is a reasonable place to stay in Oxford. However, the price per night (we paid £75 for a double room) is really excessive for what you get (I would expect a better room and far superior bathroom for that price). I know it's Oxford, and perhaps that's a pretty standard rate for the area, but I did feel that better quality accommodation should be offered at that price.
