You need to eat somewhere special on your birthday, especially on a rainy day when you're not feeling too special yourself. Well, the Ashmolean Dining Room was the place to go. We were lucky to be seated quickly but we go there early so that's a tip if you don't want to wait.
As it was lunch we decided against the wine but had lovely fizzy elderflower and the table water. The sharing platter selection tempted us so we chose the vegetarian option with an addition of a side order of pommes frites. This was delivered quickly, piping hot, with several dipping sauces and we had a great time trying all the wonderfully cooked items. The veg tempura was fab as were the aubergine croquettes but the watermelon and feta salad was the star of the show and was devoured in minutes. We probably didn't really need the chips but we took our time and ate them along with the houmous and pitta bread. It just meant that dessert had to wait for another venue two hours later!
Our waiter was very nice and very quick to respond to extra requests. He wasn't over familiar but smiled when we joked with him and made us feel very welcome.
This is a smart location which is nice to dress up for. I would recommend booking if you can or turn up early as we did. And then of course you have the wonderful museum to wander round afterwards. Heaven!
