Description: Welcome to The High Table, Oxford’s undiscovered tranquil lounge bar and restaurant. Formally Merton’s bar, it has been transformed and modernised into a stylish and comfortable restaurant and lounge with access from the High Street and Mecure Eastgate Townhouse. Themed with great authors in mind the lounge bar offers competitively priced choice of wines by the glass, a great selection of mixed drinks and single malts and an even better selection of classic cocktails. Ideal for that well earned drink after work. Whether it’s a romantic meal for two, a family gathering or a large party our restaurant suits all. Enjoy dishes such as traditional haddock and chips, homemade soup or check the skill in the kitchen and order from our A La Carte Menu.

“Disappointing ...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2013

Yes, we were disappointed! Not that it was disastrous meal or even a poor set choices, but just that we expected more than something which was acceptable but nothing more. The ham hock was too cold (I expect it was just taken out of the fridge) and nowhere near the right temperature to enjoy fully; the main course was again nothing better than OK - the ravioli was little more than average and the belly pork needed cooking more slowly and for longer. The desserts were better. The high spot was the wine which was good value and the service was also good.

We have eaten at Mercure restaurants before and have usually been pleasantly surprised. Given the reviews (most of which are very positive) we were expecting a better experience than we had. That said, it must do something right as they were turning people away as it was fully booked!

“Great service...but poor food and quality .”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2013

We was a table of 4 on Wednesday evening we turned up early and we was well greeted and had are coats taken and we was seated very quickly. They have a good wine selection. we had a bottle of vidal sauvignon blanc and a bottle of Rare Vineyards Pinot Noir 2009 and both wines were very nice and well kept . their was no bread on the table so we asked for some its always nice too have bread with wine before a starter just as a little appetiser while you have some wine . 3 of the 4 ordered starters 1 soup of the day which was cauliflower but unfortunately it was under seasoned by a great margin and was almost tasteless but the presentation was very good , salad of crayfish and prawns it was a prawn cocktail on a plate but deconstructed it was what it was boring to the eye, king prawns in puff pastry with sweet chilli sauce this was served on a rectangle plate with puff pastry prawns served on top with a blue dragon sweet chilli sauce pretty lazy attempt as a starter .
We did not have a long wait for mains to come around 10 / 15 mins. 3 of us ordered the leg of lamb and roasted root vegetables and 1 risotto we received are 3 leg of lamb but no risotto and was told very politely that their will be a 5min wait and that it would be taken of the bill . what we received after the 5min wait was indescribably terrible over cooked risotto, big chunks of beetroot , very sweet and no salt it tasted like rice pudding , it was sent back followed by a complimentary desert . we ordered cheese before the deserts and asked specifically if we could eat the cheese before the desert unfortunately after about 5 minutes into eating are cheese and enjoying are wine we had all are deserts seemed all a bit rushed after mains . I will give it too them cooking for 3 chefs from 3 different parts of England probably isn't that easy but unfortunately it was a let down

“Relaxing afternoon tea”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2013

This place is a real secret on the busy high street. The afternoon tea I have tried in the lounge/bar area of the hotel is comfortable. The cream tea starts from 6.95 and you can chose any tea or coffee from the menu. Staff is always friendly and attentive. I wouldn't rate the scones the best I have ever had, but they come nicely presented. Definitely worth a recommendation!

“Slow service despite being empty”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2013

This restaurant was virtually empty when I went, and my friends who have been tell me the same. Despite this, the service is remarkably slow - I waited 45 minutes for my order. The food itself was OK, but nothing special.

I would certainly recommend going elsewhere.

Dear Laurenlin_23,

Thank you for your feedback. At the time of your visit in October 2012, we were experiencing operational problems. They have now been rectified by the employment of a new kitchen and restaurant team. We have also introduced a new a la carte menu and have had excellent feedback from our other guests.
I hope despite your experience in October 2012, we would be able to welcome you back to the High Table Restaurant in the near future.

Kind Regards,

Karin Snoek
