“Lovely host and great rooms!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2010

Pat is a lovely host and very welcoming. She's a wealth of information and provides a excellent breakfast. The rooms were clean, warm and comfortable and would definitely stay here again. The B&B is on the main bus route so only need to wait max 10-15 minutes for a bus. You can also walk into the centre of town too.

Lovely owner, very friendly. Chatted with guests as we ate breakfast.
Room was cosy, if slightly on the small side, although very well appointed and my only criticism would be that the wardrobe door didn't open freely.
Located on one of the main arterial roads into Oxford, however even though I had a room at the front of the house, it was very quiet.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2010

I stayed at The Ridings recently for one night to enjoy a city break with a friend. One of the best points of the guest house is its' excellent location very close to the city centre, with either a 20 minute walk into town or a two minute bus ride. There were plenty of buses running up and down Abingdon Road and despite having never been to Oxford before it was easy to get around by public transport. The owner had helpfully written down the bus numbers which serviced the guest house too. There was also sufficient off-road parking for three cars.

The room itself was clean and comfortable, but it was very small and difficult to move around with two people occupying the room. Importantly, the website describes the double rooms as 'en-suite', but I was very surpised to find that 'en-suite' meant a shower in the corner of the bedroom and a toilet and small sink covered by a sliding door. I have stayed in lots of bed and breakfasts and 'en-suite' to me means a separate bathroom within the room. The point is you would have to know someone pretty well to feel comfortable showering in front of them, but the owner had supplied a screen to provide some privacy, which we did use.

There was plenty of cupboard and drawer space for clothes, a kettle for hot drinks, plus TV. However, annoyingly, it was little things which irritated me, for example there were no plugs adjacent to the mirror for a hairdryer or hair straighteners. We occupied Room 2 and both of us had great difficulty locking our door, to the extent we had to leave it open during breakfast because we just couldn't get it locked.

I was particularly unhappy on check-out when the card reader for payment wasn't working. Whilst I accept that something like this is beyond the owners control, it meant leaving my credit card number and details for payment later and hoping that the details would be shredded/disposed of properly.

The bed however was really comfortable and the breakfast was delicious. A selection of cereals and fresh fruits were offered, along with prunes, orange juice and healthy yoghurts. Choice of tea/coffee and toast was offered along with a traditional cooked breakfast which was delicious.

Overall I did not feel that the room/experience was worth £95. The locality was excellent (but not city centre) but it did not warrant £95 a night, especially considering the bathroom arrangement, door lock, and difficulty paying by card. In summary I wouldn't recommend this Guest House to a friend of mine.

I lived there for one night to travel oxford. It is easy to find the house by riding X3,and walking distance from bus stop.I think it just need 10 minutes most to go to town center.
The owner was a nice and lovely lady, she put lots of small things make guest feel comfortable, like warm water on the table.I lived in a single room,it was very very clean and tidy. The lovely pot with tea and diffrerent coffee, she prepares everything you can think in the room even clean and white dressing gown.Of course i had a very good night in Oxford. The breakfast is excellent. She cook traditional British Breakfast that i can't refuse keep eating. At Last,I have to say the owner is amazing and kind lady, she help me to send me to town center. This is a first guest house i lived it,and it give me unforgettful impression.Highly recommoned to everyone will live in it.

Stayed for 2 nights with a girlfriend in ensuite twin room, downstairs at back of house. Spotless and well equipped room with very comfy beds. Good shower with loo and basin in ensuite. Guest lounge with log fire and tv, very cosy. Good cooked breakfast in conservatory. 20 mins walk to centre of Oxford or 2 mins to bus stop with buses very frequently. Duke of Monmouth pub at same bus stop - delicious steak fondue, good service and welcome. Parking for 3 cars on forecourt, further parking in side street. Very highly recommend this B&B, would stay again.

My husband, my oldest daughter and her husband, my 9 year old daughter and I stayed at this lovely, welcoming home recently while attending a graduation at Oxford. What an incredible hostess - warm and friendly, very accommodating. And the breakfast was sensational, a wonderful selection of fresh fruits and juices, cereals and granola, followed by a traditional full English cooked breakfast. A beautiful home, spotlessly clean in a great location. I highly recommend!!

loved this b and b, lots of thoughtful little efforts made to make us feel comfortable. Really friendly and homely, also close to town.
