“Lovely little hotel!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2011

I stayed at the Buttery for a long weekend with my boyfriend and we really liked it. I hadn't been to Oxford before and wasn't sure what would be the best place to stay, and I'm so glad we went for the Buttery! It's a really cute little place with lots of character and very cosy. The location is perfect as well, it's right in the centre! We thought it was very good value for money over all.

The location of this hotel is fantastic. On Broad Street right where you want to be if you need to be central, and a very short walk from Gloucester Green Bus Station.

The rooms are good - clean, a decent size, nice furnishings and the bathroom has a reasonably sized shower, but beware if you are on the top floor and have a heavy suitcase. The stairs are narrow and steep.

The reception staff are friendly and helpful as were the breakfast buffet attendants.

A very good all round hotel.

This is one of 2 Buttery Hotels I stayed at, the other at Woodstock.

From the moment I made the booking, the friendliness and professionalism just shone through.

The reception at both hotels is genuine and friendly.

The rooms are more than comfortable and the breakfast (included) is a good start to the day.

None of the rooms was pokey, all were large and ensuite perfect.

If you are either in Oxford or Woodstock, stay there. Lovely.

Room Tip: Just rely on the staff. All the rooms are good.

To start with, you wont get a better location than this. Right on Broad street, opposite balliol college, incredibly central.

The room itself was quaite pleasant: large and well appointed and with a very comfortable bed. No complaints at all, and in fact was quite pleased with that. Between the location and the room, that makes it recommendation-worthy righ there.

The bathroom was spacious and with good water pressure, but built for midgets. Why place a showerhead on the wall so only people under 5'8 can use it? Why place the mirror so low on the wall?

Biggest complaint: no idea what the breakfasts are like because the 'free' breakfast ended extremely early and the prices for a paid breakfast are high and uncompetitive.

All that said, there are some questionable hotels in Oxford, and this is one of the best I have stayed in without jumping into a higher price range. Not perfect, but certainly worthwhile.

From the outside The Buttery eatery at ll Broad Street Oxford looks attractive and welcoming. However, anyone thinking of grabbing themselves a quick, short, and modest lunch will be well advised to check the menu and the inside wall board/menu for prices before they commit themselves to ordering food. If you don't do that, then you will be uncomfortably surprised, if not shocked, at the completely rip-off prices they bill you or eating in.

As you mention our prices are clearly listed on our black boards (as well as our menus) which indicate the prices for both eat in and take away. Customers are required to pay at the time of placing their order so are fully aware of the cost of their meal before they receive it. A closer look at fellow cafes along Broad Street and the surrounding area in the city centre would show our prices to be equal if not better.

The Buttery is very centrally located in Oxford. The main draw is price and location. There is ready access to all the colleges and sites in town. Best to park outside town in a "car park". Breakfast was nothing special but satisfactory. Service was not great; despite the fact that it was a "no smoking" place, there were smokers and nobody addressed the issue. The regular bed was fine but the pullout couch was not comfortable.

I chose The Buttery due to the glowing reviews, central location, facilities, and because I found a good deal on lastminute.com for what seemed like a beautiful guest house that would feel like something better than the ordinary.

Sadly it didn't deliver. Nowhere on the website does it mention how unaccessible this hotel is for anyone with any disability or any physical problems as you have to climb an impossibly steep flight of stairs to get to reception. When we got there we were told our room was then up 2 more flights of stairs and weren't given the option of a more accessible room unless we paid more money - this was disgustingly upsetting and erring on discriminatory.

The people behind reception, whilst pleasant and friendly, had no idea what service they should really offer in a large guest house. It wasn't their fault that their rooms werent accessible to disabled people, but they made no attempt to try and put the problem right - just told us we had to pay more money if we wanted a more accessible room. It took a lot of time and discussion before they actually called anyone more senior.

The hotel says they have high speed internet in each room. They don't. The rooms on the top floor cant get the wi-fi so they give you a cable, but this didnt work either. when we were eventually moved to a more accessible room where wi-fi was available, the network didnt work and kept losing signal.

The rooms were pleasant, but not outstanding. The normal price is £125 per night and I feel nothing, aside from the very central location, demanded such a price tag as, quite aside from the poor communication and misadvertising, it was nice and clean, but nothing special.
