We chose this hotel as the location by the river Thames in Berkshire seemed so tranquil and inviting. Having spent the Easter saturday afternoon walking around the beautiful town of Henley we booked into the hotel in the late afternoon and was shown to our somewhat quirky room in the far corner of the courtyard. Very clean, very smart with a bath at the end of the bed and a fantastic shower room beyond that. Great tea and coffee facilities, mini bar and snacks available too. Flat screen television and magazines to hand. In all a very nice room albeit rather warm with the uncontrollable radiator set to melting point – anyway with the window opened into the courtyard this was almost remedied together with the air-conditioning unit at the side of the bed turned to a cool breeze. Small problem resolved.
Dinner at 6.30pm was pretty good, although the restaurant was somewhat quiet the service was a little inattentive. Food was tasty, good portions and presented well. The surrounds and atmosphere were delightful. Having worked our way through the three course menu and washed down with a good wine we retreated back across the courtyard to our room ‘Willi Orbitz’ for a quiet nightcap and perhaps a relaxing bath. So far so good.
What we had not realised or indeed not been told was that the room next to ours was a function room that was in full use for a noisy celebration. The music was quite audible from within all areas of our room and the voices of the attending guests were extremely raucous. This was compounded by their door opening and closing constantly as the guests were coming in and out mainly to smoke in the vicinity of our window that was now firmly closed. Not so good now.
It was 10.30pm and a Saturday night so obviously if I wanted peace and quiet I should have booked a room in the Shetland Islands however I did need some reassurances that this boisterous party would be finishing at a reasonable time. I asked at the front desk and whilst they were sympathetic they were unable to change our rooms but informed us that the party would be only until midnight. We decided to go for a late night walk around the town and on our return we were kindly offered a drink on the house as a token for the inconvenience caused. We gratefully accepted and eventually went back to our room at 11.30pm and went to bed albeit still very noisy. Alas the music continued until 12.25am with the guests leaving slowly and noisily. At 1.00 am guests, somewhat merry, were still in the courtyard smoking and shouting. By 1.20am there was finally peace from outside. Go to sleep?
Clink…… clink….clink….five minute pause……..clink… clink……… The plumbing above the bed, behind the headboard decided to have its own all night party!!! Fanbloodytastic!
Bleary eyed, unhappy guests now eating hearty breakfast, lots of strong coffee looking forward to checking out and going home for an afternoon nap. Not quite what I expected for spending £350.00 for a night out. Front office staff almost sympathetic – here’s our card let the manager know. Thank you very much I’m off and somehow not so sure that I would be keen to come back in a hurry.

I was extremely disappointed that your recent overnight stay at Hotel du Vin Henley was not of the high standard which you would expect from us.
The small negatives in the bedrooms which you have mentioned will be addressed. As a hotel, our first obligation is to deliver a comfortable night’s sleep. I completely understand that this is very difficult if the room is too hot – or indeed too cold.
I would greatly appreciate it if you could contact me at the hotel so I can perhaps look to address the issues that blighted your recent stay. Hopefully we could also go some way towards restoring your faith in the Hotel du Vin brand.
I can be contacted through the main hotel number, and if preferable, would be delighted to call you at a time of convenience to yourself.
I hope to hear from you.
