Was a big fan of HDV when they first opened but haven't stayed at one in approx 10 years. I think it is obvious that they are owned by a large corporate and not by the individuals who started it - it appears to need a strong manager to watch whats going on and crack the whip . Lots of little issues that on their own seem petty but put together meant it was a disappointing visit. We were given a £20 20 year anniversary voucher for our next visit when we left - I think we'll try somewhere else the next time we are looking to get away.
For the first time I have written 2 reviews - one for future guests and one for HDV - will be interested to see if there's a response.
Great building and communal areas. Interesting dining room and bar area is ok
Bedrooms are great, comfortable and well kitted out with great bathrooms
Service was poor. When you got a staff member in front of you they were very attentive but they did not control the service. A simple lunch took approx 40 minutes to arrive (in a near empty bar area). The waiter did not check up on us or appear aware that we were waiting forever - he did however comp one of the sandwiches when I grumbled when asked how lunch was.
Dinner was poor - 2 days before Christmas so we ordered off the Christmas menu as it seemed good value at c£30 for 3 courses. The steak was small and grey and covered in a bland grey sauce and the separate veg were dry. Desert and starter were average. I think it was called the Christmas menu because it could be easily and quickly served to lots of guests rather than it being a festive meal.
The sign by the dining room says it all "Bistro" not restaurant.
Review to HDV Management
When checking in there was one member of staff who was serving another guest and the phone was ringing off the hook. After approx 2/3 minutes 3 other staff appeared from a side room, one answered the phone and the other 2 ignored me. Gee thanks - I'm only a paying guest!
Bar lunch took approx 40 minutes to arrive (see above) - waiters need to liaise with kitchen.
Same with dinner, we ordered drinks during main course which never arrived so we had to cancel by the time dessert was ordered.
The bar tables and floor were dirty at lunch time - its wasn't busy and everything should have been clean and tidy.
During lunch trundle beds were constantly being moved through the bar area - why? not very professional.
A whole corner of the bar area sofas were taken over by HDV staff on laptops and we could overhear the discussions and phone calls they were having - again, not very professional.
Lots of bottles in the dining room look great but many of them were covered in dust.
£15 for "valet parking" - you are not a central London hotel and if I'm spending £300 for lunch, dinner and room I think its petty to charge this amount.
Morning newspaper not complimentary.
Do you ever employ secret shoppers/guests - you should, you might find the results interesting.
