“Looks good from the outside”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2012

Stayed in the old part of this resort, not the brand new Crowne Plaza building next door for a week long conference. It has a beautiful old Main Building and several of the rooms are decorated in grand style befitting a Duke, which is what the house was originally built for. The standard rooms were basic but the food and the service were very good.

We took our friends from the US to stay at Heythrop and they absolutely loved the experience. Stay in a suite in the main house, we stayed in Berry and Hampton, both were wonderfully decorated with awesome view. We also had the spa stay package and the spa facilities and treatment were very good. The spa is in a newer wing extension.

Room Tip: Stay in a suite in the Main House. Berry or Hampton were exceptional.

Check in was efficient and friendly with plenty of information offered with regard to history, options for food and facilities. The room however, was a big let down. Not enough room to swing a cat, I quickly went out to explore nearby Enstone, visiting the local store with a quaint cafe. The old house is truly impressive albeit looking a little let down and neglected in places. Views around the park are stunning though. I was only staying for one night on business with a colleague, we decided not to eat at the hotel but visited The Crown Inn about a mile away, delicious food and great service.

My fears were realised when I had a sleepless night on a mattress that seemed to have no support, the curtains did not close properly but at least the room was clean. You can't help thinking that whatever group owns this property, they are missing a trick. The house is begging for a complete overhaul to become somewhat more upmarket.

Room Tip: Upgrade and stay in the Main House

the receptionist was very nice, she upgraded us for some reason when we arrived to a bigger room it was called jasmine. the hotel is very old, grand style, it is a ramshackle you could get lost very easily. you have to walk through the hotel to the crown plaza if you havent booked dinner in the heythrop. my advice would be to stay in the crown plaza part if you dont like grand mansion style living.

Many thanks’ for your honest assessment of your stay with us. Our aim is to ensure that all guests have a relaxing and an enjoyable time here at Heythrop Park. The architecture as you said is lovely and of an old, grand style. But we are lucky to have the modern Crown Plaza, which gives our guests a choice We look forward to seeing you in the future.

We stayed here for two nights. We were booked into a room just along from the main house the room was very small so we asked if we could upgrade they did not have anything availalbe for both the nights that they could updrade us to for free, but they did offer us a suite in the main house at an extra cost, it was definatley worth doing we had a lovely suite it was very clean and comfortable. The reception staff were very helpfull as were the bar staff and the leisure club. The lesiure facilites were lovely and modern, pre book the spa if you want any treatments as I was very lucky to get in for a treatment on the Sat. The breakfast was better the 2nd day in the main house terrace restaurant the 1st day in the crown plaza hotel the food was quite cold. The bar in the crown plaza was again nice and modern. We ate at the pub called The Crown in enstone the food there was excellent. All in all a nice relaxing child free break the grounds in which the hotel is set in is amazing.

Room Tip: Try to stay in the main house even if you have to pay a bit extra.

It was a pleasure to read your review. It is so important to have time out from the hustle and bustle of a hard working week (or a well earned break from children - as most parents know that no matter how good they are, they are still hard work) and to spend some quality time relaxing with your partner. The Crown in enstone is a short walk, but I am glad that you enjoyed the local hospitality. We take great pride in making sure that all our customers have an enjoyable and a relaxing time. Our aim is to maintain high standards. The team look forward to seeing you again It really matters to us that our guests receive the very best service. Regards J Angus Resort Director.

We stayed overnight here two weeks ago, we enjoyed the whole experience. The Public rooms are beautiful, the grounds wonderful for walks - take wellies for the 2 mile walk. The swimming pool and spa are lovely, the pool temperature was the warmest I have ever swum in in a hotel pool. The staff were very helpful and obliging. The rooms are very basic and small, but adequate for an overnight stay . Would recommend this hotel for the superb surroundings and excellent food - evening and breakfast were first class.

Room Tip: dont expect the rooms to be smart - they are not, but perfectly adequate for overnight stays - comfo...

We were met by the Receptionist's "Hiya" - after getting our room key we went to the room, passing on the way a 'caution' traffic cone holding a door open. In the corridor of the wing it was very cold with the radiators turned off, there was a dreadful smell of damp and when we got into the very small room we found peeling wallpaper in 3 places and peeling paint on the beam in the ceiling. At some time the electric towel rail had been removed (there was still the switch for it and the indicator light lit up !) but the replacement, non electric rail was badly screwed into the wall. I pointed all this out to the Male receptionist who simply said "Sorry about that".

There were 8 channels available on the television (only 7 seemed to get reception) which seems very few for the modern age, internet access cost £5 for an hour or £10 for 24 hr access.

On checking timings for breakfast we found that the timings shown on the check-in form which accompanied the key card were at odds to the times shown in the guest folder - by an hour in both directions !

The bar staff (1) were overtasked and we and another elderly couple were told by the young lady behind the bar "sorry guys (!) but you'll have to wait because I've got an order to finish"; the other couple didn't bother.

In the evening the other bar staff successfully managed to connect the beer pump to the lager keg and the lager pump to the beer keg and the use of a measure for Gin seemed slightly alien !! The choice of draught beers and lagers was exceptionally dull - Carlsberg, Grolsch, Guiness and Coors. Worthingtons was the sole 'Bitter' and does not excite the palate of beer drinkers !!

On a positive note - the staff at the Health Spa were extremely polite and helpful and the morning staff were very helpful for breakfast. The food was also very tasty.

Room Tip: Stay at the Crowne Plaza
